Can Anderson hold his own?

2019 has not been a great year for Gary Anderson, who won back to back PDC World Championship titles in 2015 and 2016. Because of injury, illness and a lack of form this season, Anderson hasn’t been at his best. But here is the Flying Scotsman in the fourth round of the Championships. He opened with a straight-set victory against Brandon Dolan, but then in the third round, he was under a bit of pressure from the unseeded Ryan Searle. Anderson got through 4-3 in sets. To be fair, Anderson has produced some good three-dart averages. It was almost 94 in his first match then just shy of 100 in his match against Searle. But is this going to be a case of the longer that the tournament goes on, the more struggles with stamina he is going to have?

Head to head

The head to head is even at one win each. Their first meeting was back in 2017 with Anderson getting the win. But they met just back in October at the Players Championship Ireland and Aspinal took the victory.

Aspinall can produce a big challenge

Nathan Aspinall opened in the second round with a 3-1 win over America’s Danny Baggish. That was comfortable enough for the Englishman. Like Anderson, he was also taken to the full seven sets in his third-round match. Aspinall had a tricky game there against 21st seed Krzysztof Ratajski, but he battled his way through that potential banana skin. It was a tougher opponent than what Anderson was up against in the third round. So Aspinall should still be pretty confident here. The Asp was a semi-finalist at the last edition of the World Championships. He also claimed his first major televised title this year with his success at the UK Open. He is on the up in the game and poses a big threat to two-time champion Anderson.

Gary Anderson v Nathan Aspinall Prediction and tip

Aspinall’s win over Ratajski in the last round should set him up well or this challenge. This could easily go the distance and Aspinall has to be in with a chance of outlasting the former champion. The Asp is worth a flutter in the match outright at 11/10 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on December 23rd, 2019 at 11:04 pm).
