Gennady Golovkin v Saul Alvarez Preview – 16th September 2018

It has been another great year of boxing and we aren’t done yet. One of the most anticipated fights of the entire year, the rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez is finally here. The first bout between them, which was twelve months ago, ended in a controversial draw and to date, one of the strangest boxing outcomes in a long time.

Twelve months ago the scrap between GGG and Alvarez was hyped up big time. It was a spectacle as well with the two of them going at each other, but one man had a clear edge. That was Kazakh fight Golovkin who throughout the absorbing contest looked to be scoring more, landing more punches than his opponent. Most pundits at the time through the win was going to GGG but just one of the judges gave him the win, another scoring it even and then a really strange one gave Alvarez a big 118-110 win.

The result didn’t do down well with either fight nor the crowd in Las Vegas who wanted it. It was that heavy scoring from the one judge in favor of Mexico’s Alvarez that was just so hard to understand. But the rematch is here and hopefully the issue is going to be settled. There was supposed to be a rematch earlier this year but it had to be postponed because Alvarez failed a couple of drugs tests.

Golovkin to get his rewards

GGG is a supreme fighter and has won all but one of his 39 contests. That lone exception being that draw with Alvarez. 34 of his 38 wins have been by a knockout. He is the man everyone in the division wants a shot at. He hasn’t been happy about what he deems to be “excuses” by Alvarez about what happened over the fighter’s failed drug tests.

Triple G is going to be defending his WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight titles in this. His only fight since that first bout with Alvarez was a knockout success over Vanes Martirosyan in the second round back in May. This is a fight where he needs to come out an impress to solidify his place among the greats in this sport. Golovkin v Alvarez is 2/5 odds at bet365 to go the distance* (betting odds taken from September 12th, 2018 at 10:42 pm).

Alvarez with second chance

Alvarez has only suffered one defeat in his 52-fight career and that was a points decision loss against Floyd Mayweather five years ago. This will be his first fight since his unanimous decision success over fellow countryman Julio Cesar Chavez back in May 2017. So the Golden Boy gets a second shot at hitting the top of the game and he is 11/8 to do it* (betting odds taken from September 12th, 2018 at 10:42 pm).

A win of any nature here against Triple G is going to propel him to all sorts of accolades. This is his big chance. He stuck in there in the first fight with GGG but never did enough to win it. That’s the edge that was missing but all the talk from his camp is how angry he is, how badly he wants to put GGG to the canvas.

Predictions

Canelo is angry, that’s fair enough, but GGG has a lot more to feel aggrieved about because we saw him do enough to have settled this score with the Mexican at the first time of asking. These are two tough fighters with neither having too many clear-cut flaws. But the class and composure of Golovkin has shone through time and time again and if there’s an advantage in terms of defense, he has it. It will be interesting to see this go the distance again. We are going with Triple G by a decision at 15/8 odds* (betting odds taken from September 12th, 2018 at 10:42 pm).
