Goodwood Cup Stakes Favourites and Outsiders
Because Goodwood Cup Stakes tips have been dominated so much by STRADIVARIUS for what feels like forever, there has been a trend of race favourites coming up trumps.
Five of the last six renewals have seen the favourite on the day deliver the odds and looking back a little further, it’s six of the last ten.
It’s worth putting into context that three of the last four races have been won by Stradivarius, who was the favourite for each.
So too last year when Trueshan got his nose in front for trainer Alan King.
Longer-priced winners
Does that mean for Goodwood Cup Stakes Betting odds, that it’s not worth looking down the field?
Of course not. As highlighted on the King George weekend at Ascot, with Pyledriver defying massive odds, sizing up the entire field for horse racing tips has to be done.
The longest-priced winner in the last ten renewals of the Goodwood Cup Stakes was Brown Panthers in 2013 from a 13/2 SP.
Interestingly the two following renewals of the Group 1 were won by a 5/1 and then a 6/1 horse.
If we skew this the other way, the four winning horses in the last ten renewals who weren’t favourites, all won at a quote of at least 5/1.

About the Goodwood Cup Stakes
This is one of Britain’s biggest flat races and it is steeped in rich history. The first edition was hosted in 1808 and through the early years, the Goodwood Cup was a 3m contest It then trimmed back to 2m 5f.
When the current grading system was introduced in the early 1970s, the race was a Group 2, but it was dropped back to Group 3 for about a decade. In 1995 it went back up to Group 2 and its rise to the top level was a fairly recent one.
The big change in distance was in 1991 when it was cut right down to the 2m mark. The 2017 was the first renewal of the Goodwood Cup at Group 1 with Stradivarius landing the win as a 3-year-old.
The importance of the Goodwood Cup can’t be underestimated and it’s part of the fantastic Stayers’ Triple Crown of British racing. It’s the second leg of the trio of races, coming after the Ascot Gold Cup and preceding the Doncaster Cup.
Goodwood Cup Stakes contenders – July 26th 2022
This year’s renewal for Goodwood Cup Tips is red-hot with three massive players battling it out for the top honours.
Heading up the list is KYPRIOS, who is trained by Aiden O’Brien. His form and ability has come on leaps and bounds since he returned in the spring.
Kyprios is the current 13/8 market leader in Good Cup Stakes odds* (odds recorded at 16:12 GMT on July 24th, 2022 at William Hill).
It’s been three wins from three for Kyprios, rising up the ranks with a Listed victory before a Group 3 at Leopardstown. The biggest impact of all came at the 2022 Ascot Gold Cup last month, which he won by half of a length.
Kyprios staysd teamed up with Ryan Moore and will likely pose a massive threat in this top-class fixture.
Stradivarius seeks fifth title
STRADIVARIUS is back again at Goodwood and he is looking for his fifth Goodwood Cup title. Arguably the greatest stayer of his generation, he returns looking to turn the tables on Kyprios.
Stradivarius was third to that rival in the Gold Cup and jockey Frankie Dettori took a bit of flak for that ride, which was well below par.
As he showed earlier this year in landing the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup, Stradivarius still retains all the ability in the world.
The threat of Straviarius is evident as he is the 5/2 second-favourite in Goodwood Cup Stakes tips* (odds recorded at 16:12 GMT on July 24th, 2022 at William Hill).
The other big player lining up in the 2022 Goodwood Cup Odds is TRUESHAN who is on a hot winning streak at the moment.
He claimed victory in this last year, sparking this unbeaten streak which is now up to five.
Having beaten Stradivarius on more than one occasion in that streak, Trueshan is a big player. He arrives fresh after a handicap score in the Northumberland Plate last month.
He will be primed and ready to roll and is currently at 11/4* (odds recorded at 16:12 GMT on July 24th, 2022 at William Hill).
Key players from the chasing pack
Included in what can be perceived as the chasing pack to the leading three, there is COLTRANE and PRINCESS ZOE with the biggest claims.
If an outsider surprise is going to unfold on Tuesday in the day’s opening action of the Goodwood Festival, then it will probably be from one of those.
Coltrane is currently seeking a hattrick after landing the Coral Marathon last time out, while Princess Zoe is a good talented mare who won the Sagaro Stakes in the spring before a sixth-place finish in the Ascot Gold Cup.
Goodwood Cup Stakes Trends Glorious Goodwood 2022
For the next part of this Goodwood Cup Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.
Goodwood Cup Stakes Trainer Statistics
The only active trainer for the 2022 Goodwood Cup Stakes tips who has won the fixture on more than one occasion is Aiden O’Brien. He has struck twice in the last twenty renewals.
It has been a while since he landed one on the board, however, as Yeats scored for him in 2006 and 2008. O’Brien has the favourite Kyprios on Tuesday.
However, there is a bigger player if we look at the Gosdens. John Gosden trained Stradivarius to all four victories that the stayer has put on the board in this race.
John Gosden is now operating under a joint licence with his son Thady. The Gosdens have Stradivarius back in this.
The only winning trainer with an entry into this year’s renewal is Alan King, whose hopes are resting on Trueshan.
Goodwood Cup Stakes Jockey Statistics
The only jockey with an entry into this year’s renewal of Goodwood Cup Stakes to have won more than once in the last 20 renewals is Andrea Atzeni. He notably takes over on Stradivarius ahead of Frankie Dettori.
The two wins that Atzeni has had in this contest was on the back of the great stayer.
Dettori, who is the joint all-time leading jockey in the Goodwood Cup Stakes, doesn’t have a ride this year.
Three other jockeys in this year’s renewal have won the fixture once before. Those are Ryan Moore, Jim Crowley and Hollie Doyle.
The big combinations of trainer and jockey here are More on Aiden O’Brien’s Kyprios and Doyle on Alan King’s Trueshan.

Goodwood Cup Stakes 2021 Review
STRADIVARIUS did not get a chance to make it five straight victories in the Goodwood Cup last year. He was declared a non-runner.
That left the door open for TRUESHAN to come through for the win. With Hollie Doyle on his back, Trueshan had gone as the 6/5 FAV for trainer Alan King. The victory was taken by almost four lengths.
AWAY HE GOES was the runner-up in last year’s renewal and he was well within touch with a furlong to go. But he just never had a finish in him and it allowed Trueshan to just comfortably pull away.
Filling out the top three spots was SIR RON PRIESTLEY who had been a joint second-favourite on the day. He tried reeling in the two front-runners three from home, but he just couldn’t find anything in the tank to match them.
