It’s a classic FA Cup early-round tie. North vs South – non league minnows against former FA Cup winners who had fallen on hard times but are aiming to bounce back. All this taking place on a cold November night on an artificial pitch at a compact stadium in front of home fans who will be willing their team to put one over a League 1 side.

Harrogate Town Form and Team News

Wetherby Road looks set to be packed to the rafters for the visit of big-spending Pompey.
Harrogate were only promoted to the National League in 2018 but reached the play-offs last season and have EFL ambitions.
Their ground only holds 4,000 but the club has been accustomed to punching above their weight since the Weavers took charge. Irving is the club chairman and son Simon the manager of the Sulphurites.
A win over Portsmouth would equal the club’s best-ever performance in the FA Cup and this is a team on the up. They’ve risen from the sixth tier of English football under the current administration and have one player on their staff who has made FA Cup headlines in the past. Jon Stead scored twice for Bradford City in a famous win at Chelsea in 2015 and also netted in the next round at Sunderland as the Bantams made the semi-finals. He’s now 36 but is still rattling in the goals and the league side will have to pay him special attention.
Harrogate are currently just outside the play-off places in the National League and have won three and drawn one of their last four matches so are in good form.

Portsmouth Form and Team News

Pompey have picked up a little lately and that’s probably kept Kenny Jackett in a job.
Pre-season promotion favourites having outspent almost every other side in League 1 over the season, they’ve been languishing in the bottom half of the table for most of the campaign.
John Marquis cost an estimated £2million but the striker has struggled to match his goal-scoring record at Doncaster since moving to the south coast. Jackett has struggled to find a regular partner in attack for his big-money signing with Ellis Harrison and Breet Pitman both being cast in the supporting role at some stage.
Having sold Jamal Lowe over the summer, Pompey have struggled for an outlet this term but, like Harrogate, they are now unbeaten in four though wins have been scarce. Goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray is still a fitness doubt for this clash so youngster Alex Bass could keep his place. Brandon Haunstrup is again likely to replace the injured Ross McCrorie at left-back. Marquis and Harrison both scored in last Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Southend will probably be the two up top but their team still isn’t firing on all cylinders and they’ll need to arrive at Wetherby Road with the right mindset.

Harrogate Town vs Portsmouth Predictions

In a first-ever meeting between these two clubs, former Premier League side Portsmouth would probably settle for a draw and the chance to finish off the job at Fratton Park. The unfamiliar surface could unsettle Jackett’s men as much as the home team and the draw looks quite attractive at 7/2 with Bet365. A 1-1 Correct Score is 15/2 with Betvictor.
