We can pause for breath for a few days this week after the Classic weekend and Haydock’s feature race on Monday, the Betway Handicap, has attracted just the eight runners. That does mean, however, that each-way betting will be available as long as all stand their ground.
The going at Haydock has eased considerably over the last couple of days and is now forecast to be good to soft.

Lion fancied to emerge from slumbers with another victory
Themaxwecan beat Sleeping Lion and Blue Laureate over 2m at Ascot last July but James Fanshawe’s charge comes out best at the weights this time.
A very consistent handicapper, the five-year-old has been raised only 3lb for winning the valuable Mallard Handicap at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting last September so is probably still well treated.
He ran very well on his reappearance at Wolverhampton last year so goes well fresh, making current best odds of 5/1 with Coral quite attractive.
Mancini unlikely to be fine-tuned
As well as Blue Laureate, Midlands trainer Ian Williams runs Mancini.
The latter is 9/1 with Coral but is having a first run for the yard having enjoyed a successful campaign last year with Jonny Portman. Recent rain would be a concern.
Moon King seeks starring role
Moon King won four times last year over 1m6f, all on left-handed galloping tracks, so the step up to 2m is a natural progression.
He hasn’t got many miles on the clock and will handle any give in the ground so is well worth considering at the general 3/1 even if he still has a little bit to prove in this higher grade.
Charlie D may enjoy fitness advantage
Charlie D has already run three times on the all-weather this year, winning at Southwell in February.
His last run on Turf saw him successful at Bath in September in a Class 2 event but he’s only run on rain-softened ground once before and finished tailed off at Haydock so there are clearly questions to answer. He’s only a best 8/1 with Coral.
Betway Handicap Predictions
SLEEPING LION won a traditionally competitive handicap at Doncaster when last seen. This is another galloping attack and the chestnut ran well enough on his return to action last year to suggest he’ll be ready for this.
With further improvement possible over 2m, Moon King looks the likely danger as it’s difficult to see Themaxwecan defying his big weight on the forecast going.
