French challenger the favourite
Five-year-old Espoir Moriviere was a beaten favourite at Hexham just last month. He was the second of 14 and was beaten by five lengths on the day. It was on a heavy track over 2m 4f. He is still looking for the first win of his career. Espoir Moriviere will be four pounds lighter than he was in his last round out at Hexham, so that fits well for him over the slightly longer trip. He looked as if he could use the extra distance in what was his career-best effort last time out. There’s more to come from him. Cudgel a serious threat
Back in November, Cudgel went close at course and distance, losing by under a length against No Trumps. From 11 starts he has placed twice and those finishes have been inside his last three starts. That second place that he took at Hexham recently was on heavy going. He has had a couple of pounds shaved off him for this assault.
He took a place in his last race, a third-place finish behind Good News with was just short of the distance of this race. That was at Fontwell on soft going. He is one of the higher-rated horses in the field but that handicap weight is going to be a challenge as it will be for Aengus and Coniston Spa who are up there in the rating with him.
Coniston Spa is going in his handicap debut it is worth noting here. He’s never been over 2m 1f before and this is going to be a tough challenge for him. In his last outing which was at Market Rasen, he took a fourth of eleventh at 25/1 in a good effort. That was his maiden hurdle and with the handicap on him, it would be something special if he pulls out the victory.
