Meshino could light up Edinburgh derby

Scottish Premiership Betting at Bet365

Craig Levein’s Hearts go into Sunday’s Edinburgh derby with Hibernian having picked up just two points from their opening five matches. Nothing would please Hibs’ fans more than to further twist the knife in their great rivals so a spicy encounter should be on the cards at Easter Road.

Hibernian Form and Team News

Hibs are in need of a tonic of their own having failed to win in the Premiership since the opening day of the league season. Their home form has been quite impressive, however, winning four and drawing one of five matches in all competitions since the middle of July. They’ve not scored in defeats at Motherwell and Kilmarnock either side of the international break, however, so that’s an issue that Paul Heckingbottom will have been addressing in training.
Florian Kamberi is Hibs’ top scorer this season but only one of his five goals have come in the Premiership, though he did score when Hearts suffered a 2-1 loss in the Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle in May 2018. Christian Doidge is still settling in but Scott Allan is probably among the league’s best midfielders when on his game, though that hasn’t been often this term. Without his spark, the likes of Daryl Horgan normally struggle to make an impact on games and the Hibs’ defence has been looking anything but secure. They have had more shots per game against them than any other team, though the addition of loan signing Jason Naismith and the return from injury of centre-back Ryan Porteous should help in that respect.

Hearts Form and Team News

Make no mistake, Craig Levein is unlikely to be given much more time to turn things around at Hearts.
Statistics suggest Hibernian have the worst defence in the league but Hearts aren’t much better, conceding an average of more than two goals a game so far. Unsurprisingly, the Jam Tarts find themselves in a sticky situation, propping up the early table. Fans are already calling for the manager’s head as he has had two years at Tynecastle yet the team seem to be in a worse state than when he arrived.
The wheels well and truly came off a third of the way through last season and they’ve now taken just three points out a possible 33 if you incorporate the end of the last campaign. The League Cup has given Hearts some respite this term but the Premiership is their bread and butter and relegation would be a disaster for one of Scotland’s bigger clubs.
On paper, Hearts have a more potent strike force than their Edinburgh rivals but Steven MacLean and Uche Ikpeazu just aren’t hitting it off together at present and they will be without Northern Ireland’s Conor Washington for at least three months. Former Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan is looking a light of former days but they should be stronger in attack with the return of Steven Naismith and Ryotaro Meshino is surely pressing for a start.

Hibernian v Hearts Head-to-Heads

There has been no more than three total goals in 11 of the last 12 Edinburgh derbies between Hibs and Hearts but you have to go back five years since both sides arrived for the fixture in such desperate form. The Jam Tarts have won on just one of their last eight visits to Easter Road with Hibs winning five of those matches.

Hibernian v Hearts Predictions

The propensity for this game being a traditionally tight affair is largely cancelled out by the fact that both teams have trouble defending their own penalty area at present. Nerves will be a factor in a match in which there is more at stake than usual given league positions. Hibernian are probably deserving favourites in the match betting at 6/4 but can hardly be a confident choice. We’d rather have a punt on potential wildcard Ryotaro Meshino to be an Anytime Goalscorer at 10/3 with Bet365 after he got off the mark last week against Motherwell from the subs bench.
