There was an astonishing pay out from William Hill to a Sheppey housewife who landed over half a million pounds from just a £1 wager in early November. Apparently, the punter was just bored of her husband and son watching football every weekend and so decided that if she couldn’t get a hold of the TV because of her sport-watching family, then she’d just join them.
So after her son had read her the fixtures for last Saturday, she simply picked the twelve team names that she most liked the sound of.
It was an unorthodox yet winning approach as she landed a £574,278.41 windfall.
Carli Faulkner, 38, – manager of the William Hill branch in Leysdown-On-Sea, Kent, said: “This is the biggest winning bet I have ever handled and all for just a quid.
“It is incredible that the lady got them all up. Usually, customers laugh when they see a payout figure on the bottom of their slip like £574,000, but this just goes to show it can happen.
Remarkably eleven of the twelve selections on the winning bet, were actually outsiders, including Burnley’s win at Southampton at a price of 4/1. The only odds-on winner in the entire bet was Sheffield United taking a win over Hull.
William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “Apparently, the lady’s husband had been doing the £1 weekend acca since he was 18, so 40 years of practice on football punting.
