Hungerford Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

The first thing to look at for the Hungerford Stakes tips is how recent favourites in the fixture have fared. Last year’s favourite AL SUHAIL was nowhere near delivering the odds on the day.

But seeing the favourite miss out on landing the goods, has been a common trend in Hungerford Stakes racing tips recently.

The only favourite to have scored in the last ten renewals was the 2020 winner DREAM OF DREAMS.

He got the job done for Sir Michael Stoute as the 13/8F on the day, landing a comfortable score at Newbury.

Looking deeper into the performances of favourites in the Hungerford Stakes, it’s worth examining how close favourites have got. Six of the last ten favourites in the Hungerford Stakes have made a top-three finish.

Last 10 Hungerford Stakes Favourites Performances

  • 2021 – Al Suhail 6th
  • 2020 – Dream Of Dreams 1st
  • 2019 – Safe Voyage 3rd
  • 2018 – Gustav Klimt 5th
  • 2017 – Librisa Breeze 2nd
  • 2016 – Home Of The Brave 2nd
  • 2015 – Here Comes When 7th
  • 2014 – Gregorian 2nd
  • 2013 – Soft Falling Rain 2nd
  • 2012 – Soul 6th

Looking forward to Hungerford Stakes odds 2022, it is TIBER FLOW who is the 5/2 ante-post favourite* (odds recorded at 19:09 GMT on August 9th, 2022 at BetVictor).

That in turn leads us to longer odds options to consider in Hungerford Stakes tips 2022. Three of the last ten winners have been at double figures.

The biggest of those was in 2012 when LETHAL FORCE scored from a 25/1 SP.

Hungerford Stakes – Double-Figure winners Last 10 Renewals

  • 2017 – Massaat 12/1

About the Hungerford Stakes

The Hungerford Stakes has been around for a long while. The inaugural edition was in 1949. The name of the fixture was simply pulled from the town of Hungerford, which isn’t far away from Newbury.

The inaugural edition was a 12f contest, but it is currently a 7f trip. It used to be contested on the left-handed course. It was moved to the straight track in 2002 and it got bumped up to its current Group 2 status in 2006.

For the race itself, there is a 3lb allowance for fillies and mares. Former Group 1 and Group 2 winners entering the contest receive 5lb and 3lb penalties respectively.

Hungerford Stakes Contenders – 13th August 2022

The 5/2 favourite for Hungerford Stakes betting is TIBER FLOW* (odds recorded at 19:09 GMT on August 9th, 2022 at BetVictor).

It has been a progressive season for him, winning two of four runs since March. Tiber Flow landed a reappearance score at Southwell and took the Carnarvon Stakes (Listed) in May.

A solid performance in the Group 1 Commonwealth Stakes at Royal Ascot, has got him plenty of attention.

Another of the big players could be CHINDIT who does give weight to everyone else in the field. He will have a penalty for a Group 2 score in the Summer Mile at Ascot.

The Sussex Stakes at Goodwood at the top level was too hot for him last time out.

While the 7f trip may not be ideal, Chindit warrants respect at 9/2 in ante-post Hungerford Stakes odds* (odds recorded at 19:09 GMT on August 9th, 2022 at BetVictor).

Ante-post 4/1 shot POGO has been having a cracking season* (odds recorded at 19:09 GMT on August 9th, 2022 at BetVictor). He went close at the Lennox Stakes last time out at Goodwood.

That saw him just miss out on a hattrick of pattern company victories. Pogo enters as the highest-rated horse in this year’s Hungerford Stakes.

Other possible contenders in the Hungerford Stakes 2022 are DOUBLE OR BUBBLE and HAPPY ROMANCE. The former produced good form at Group 2 and Group 3 last season and has run with credit at the top level recently. Happy Romance will step back up to 7f and has continued her progress well this season.

Hungerford Stakes Runners Guide 2022

Tiber Flow (1-11218)

He will come in refreshed and recharged. That could be what he needs after struggling in the Commonwealth Cup. But form for the season before that was rapidly rising and Tiber Flow claimed a win here in May.

Pogo (7-50113)

Pogo has delivered a great season and nearly got the Lennox Stakes under his belt at Goodwood. He was seeking a hat-trick of Group wins in those fixtures and is the highest-rated horse in the field.

Chindit (3-13416)

Even though he is a class act, Chindit could have a couple of question marks. The 7f trip isn’t his ideal distance and he gives weight to the rest of the field. A positive is his Group 2 Summer Mile victory at Ascot and he is a previous winner at Newbury.

Double Or Bubble (228-105)

Last season Double Or Bubble was ticking along very nicely when tried up at Group 2 and 3 last season. She continued to make strides in the Group company, trusted by connections. She has run with credit in Group One contests the last twice and the 3lb fillies allowance will help.

Happy Romance (0-32785)

With former course victories under her belt, Happy Romance could be a big player. It’s been sparkling form by her, even in defeat this season, particularly when rattling the crossbar in a Hackwood defence. Form from that run has been franked.

Dubai Poet (135-243)

Retaining a lot of potential is Dubai Poet who claimed a place finish in Royal Ascot’s Jersey Stakes earlier this season. That was without getting a decent draw. He will need to dig a little deeper against his elders.

Run To Freedom (12-4101)

Run To Freedom has come well in his last three efforts, winning two of those three. He remains sharp after a Salisbury score last month and sliding back to 7f could bring even more from him.

Happy Power (621654)

It’s been a good solid season by Happy Power, including sweeping a Listed field. He was found out at Goodwood recently though in a fourth at the Lennox when running true to form. This may be tough for him.

Jumby (1-36330)

It’s not quite come together in Group company for Jumby yet, but he continuously shows signs that he may get there. His ratings suggest he can get in it but looks far more convincing at handicaps than Group level.

Misty Grey (335321)

There has not been a victory beyond handicap company for Misty Grey. His turf record is nothing much to write home about and needs a sizable chunk of progress to land this.

Wings Of War (1-43034)

As a juvenile Wings Of War landed a Group 3 contest. He has not really shown great signs of being trained-on since then. The 7f trip is positive, but others may be more persuasive.

Primo Bacio (89-6345)

The rank outsider for the Hungerford Stakes renewal, struggled when being moved back to 7f last time out against her own sex. This is much tougher.

Hungerford Stakes Trends Newbury 2022

For the next part of this Hungerford Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 10 editions of this Group 2 fixture.

Hungerford Stakes Trainer Statistics

We have a couple of trainers who have come up with more than one victory in the last 10 renewals of the Hungerford Stakes. Those are John Gosden and William Haggas with two each.

The former can be scrubbed as the Gosdens are not holding an entry for the 2022 Hungerford Stakes. That’s a big absence as John Gosden is the all-time leading trainer with six previous winners.

William Haggas is in the frame though, with the current ante-post favourite TIBER FLOW. The two victories in the last 10 renewals for Haggas came in 2015 with Adaay and then last year when 6/1 shot Sacred got home first.

Other former winning trainers with 2022 entries are Clive Cox and Richard Hannon, both of which have won multiple times (just not within the last decade). Hannon hasn’t struck since 2008 and Cox’s last victory was eleven years ago in 2012.

For this year’s renewal, Hannon sends CHINDIT into action, while Clive Cox has 20/1 outsider WINGS OF WAR* (odds recorded at 19:09 GMT on August 9th, 2022 at BetVictor).

Hungerford Stakes Jockey Statistics

Tom Marquand was last year’s winning jockey on Sacred. As he takes the ride for Willie Haggas on TIBER FLOW for 2022, that pairing naturally looks strong.

Marquand is the only jockey in this year’s lineup to have recorded a Hungerford Stakes victory in the last decade. The all-time leading jockey is Frankie Dettori with six wins, but at the time of writing, has no ride booked for this year.

Hungerford Stakes Trends Age

Four of the last ten winners have been three years old, while six have been 4-year-olds. The 2020 winner Dream Of Dreams scored a six-year-old. He is one of only two winners in the last sixteen editions to have been older than 4 years olds. The last time a five-year-old won was back in 2003.

Breakdown of Hungerford Stakes winners’ ages in the last 20 renewals

  • 3-year-olds – 6
  • 4-year olds – 10
  • 5-year-olds – 1
  • 6-year-olds – 2
  • 7-year-olds – 1

Hungerford Stakes 2021 Review

The 2021 winner was SACRED, ridden by Tom Marquand, and trained by Willie Haggas. The 3-year-old was a 6/1 shot for the contest. Sacred had been held up a little early on and didn’t get moving until a couple of furlongs in.

But 1f from home, he was going smoothly and took the lead inside the final furlong. Sacred had opened in the Hungerford Stakes odds at 5/1.

LANEQASH was the runner-up from a 22/1 SP, finishing a furlong back of the winner. He was making steady progress all the way and tried his best to peg back Sacred in the final furlong.

But he just didn’t have the pace to close him down. Laneqash had lost a shoe in the race too but still outran his odds.

Coming home third was NJORD who was hanging around midfield for most of the contest. He was pushed a furlong from home and did briefly get his nose in front. Njord failed to find any finishing pace.
