Tea Clipper heads a competitive field

There is no questioning or doubting the form of Tea Clipper as he heads to Huntingdon on Thursday. He has already taken three wins this season. The most recent of those happened at Huntington. That was from a 1m 7f trip back in early December at class 3. In it, he took victory by a neck over Magic Dancer.

That was Tea Clipper’s handicap debut as well. All of his wins have been between 1m 7f and 2m distances. So this is a little extra in trip for him but he is the 11/4 favourite for it* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 17:52 on Wednesday, February 5th 2020).

Nicky Henderson’s double threat

Trainer Nicky Henderson has two runners in contention for this one. The first is Settie Hill who heads back into action after taking a win at Newton Abbot from 1/2 favouritism. But that was back in June of 2018, which was also his last trip over the hurdles.

It is Colonial Dreams who represents a better chance of Henderson getting a win in this one. Colonial Dreams is at 9/2 in the market* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 17:52 on Wednesday, February 5th 2020).

He was on the up back in April after taking a class 2 win at Sandown in a big field of 14 at the 2m 3f distance. He failed to get it together on his last run though at Newbury in December when he was keen but ran out of steam over a furlong further.

Messire Des Obeaux

Having not run since the spring of 2017, Messire Des Obeaux makes for an interesting entry in this one. He is a former winner at class 1 and that will probably pique some interest in him as an option. The bookmakers certainly have been cautious over him at 6/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 17:52 on Wednesday, February 5th 2020).

Other contenders

Didtheyleaveyououtto is a 4/1 shot for this Huntingdon run* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 17:52 on Wednesday, February 5th 2020). It has been a rough season for him through having finished 9th, 12th and 10th from his three runs. Barry Geraghty is in the saddle but the seven-year-old looks like he would have some work to do to get close in this one.

Along with Messire Des Obeaux at the top of the weights, there is Virgilio who is also coming back after a long absence. He pulled up in his last race which was back in November 2018. He has won four hurdles and five chases between 2m 1f and 3m 2f in his career, however.

Cristal Spirit won a maiden hurdle in January, a 19 length victory at 2m 3f. That was from a hefty mark of 12/1 as well. This will be a massive step up in company and class for him though.

Predictions & Tips

Tea Clipper has not been penalised heavily with weights at all for this one, despite his rising success and standing. So that should leave him in pretty solid contention to push for a victory at is worth considering at 11/4* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 17:52 on Wednesday, February 5th 2020).

Messire Des Obeaux is a fascinating returnee from a long break. The presence of Nicky Henderson’s Colonial Dreams can’t be overlooked. His one disappointing trip last time out, doesn’t shake off a previous distance win.
