ICC Women’s’ World Twenty20 2018 Prediction – November 9th-24th

There is a lot of cricket action around for the next couple of weeks as the West Indies host the ICC Women’s World T20 tournament. This is the sixth edition of the tournament and the second time that the West Indies (who are the current reigning champs) have hosted it.

Joining the big guns in the tournament are Bangladesh and Ireland who came through a qualifier tournament to get here.

The tournament is set up in two groups of five teams and the top two from each group go through to the semi-final, where it is the winner of Group A v winner of Group B and vice-versa.

The Final is on November 24th, 2018.

Group A

England, West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh

England are the 4/7 odds-on favourites to win Group A* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 5:12 pm), but they are going to face a couple of tricky challenges in this, notably against West Indies and South Africa. England won the World Cup last year and they will open their tournament against Sri Lanka in St Lucia on Saturday, November 11th. They have been dealt a blow with Katherine Brunt picking up an injury in war-defeat against India. The loss of the all-rounder is a huge blow for England. The West Indies beat India in the 2016 Final but some of their key players like Deandra Dottin haven’t quite been firing at their best.

Sri Lanka have a stunning threat in Chamari Atapattu and the left-handed opener can just tear teams apart. Her top score is only 31 in T20 matches this year though, missing the Asia Cup through illness which may have set her back. Then there is South Africa’s big threat of Lizelle Lee who is a Super League winner with Surrey this year. Power personified and smashed England all over the place in a game back in June. They look a strong, consistent side and are 6/1 to win the group* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 5:12 pm).

Prediction: England and South Africa to qualify.

Group B

Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland

To be realistic the Irish could find themselves out of their league in this one. They achieved a huge success in getting here and it’s hard to see where a win is going to come from for them. Australia are the group favourites and realistically those are the ones England will want to avoid in the semi finals. The Aussies are stacked with talent from Ashleigh Gardner to Meg Lanning and the massively influential Ellyse Perry. They are really going to take some stopping and are favourites to get the group win here.

India will be looking to vice-captain Smriti Mandhana to get them going. She is an effortless batswoman and was the top scorer in the 2018 Super League. Whether the rest of the line up can back her up is questionable. New Zealand are a pretty consistent side and have every chance of being in the qualification pack. Pakistan are just lacking the star punch and collective strength at the moment, and rounding it off, this is a group of death for Ireland so say the least.

Prediction: Australia and New Zealand to qualify.

England Fixtures

November 10th, England v Sri Lanka
November 12th, England v Bangladesh
November 16th, England v South Africa
November 18th, West Indies v England

Prediction

Australia are the ones to beat and we just can’t actually see anyone doing that. The batting power that they have in their line up is crazy good and it is going to be a real challenge for anyone to tame them.

England are a good solid option to go to the semi-finals and even by winning their group. But right now in the game, it is Australia all the way at 11/8 odds to win outright* (betting odds taken on November 9th, 2018 at 4:50 pm)
