So I’ve¬† a question – did I miss the memo that detailed that we should now regard vloggers as celebrities?

I know this is the digital age and most people would rather watch someone threading beads or blowing up balloons on YouTube than watch mainstream TV, but seeing as ‘I’m A Celebrity, etc.’ is a cornerstone of ITV’s Saturday evening entertainment, would the broadcaster not have been wiser to stick to those who are at least known to the typical TV viewer?

Of course, that is a subjective point. I’m still a bit of a dinosaur myself and do occasionally tear myself away from streamed box sets to watch live TV as provided by ITV and the BBC. But even I am struggling to recognise some of this year’s celebrity jungle castaways.

The word ‘celebrity’ is used in its broadest-possible context as I don’t watch soaps so I’ve absolutely no idea who Jennie McAlpine is. Unfortunately, I do know Stanley Johnson but who on earth is going to vote for one of the people responsible for bringing Boris Johnson into this world? Amir Khan was a boxing world champion but his career must be going down the pan if he can afford time away from the gym to play minder to this bunch and, by his own admission, he won’t be much use if there are spiders in the camp. Denis Wise was an ordinary footballer and an even more ordinary football manager and I’ve seen Shappi Korsandi do stand-up but, boy, is the Iranian-born comic going to need a sense of humour to live with some of these in conditions which are a world away from the norm (though I suspect things aren’t as basic as they are portrayed)!

It is 6/1 the field for this year’s ‘I’m A Celebrity’ and, with only 10 runners, there has to be some value somewhere. Jamie Lomas, who keeps leaving Hollyoaks in search of something better and always ends up going back, is sharing favouritism with the aforementioned Ms McAlpine with that vlogger I was talking about at the top, Jack Maynard, next best in the early betting with Betfred. The same firm are also best odds on reality TV’s Georgia Toffolo, singer Vanessa White and Dennis Wise.

But let’s address the elephant in the jungle. We are British so, for one reason or another, we’ll be mostly watching to see if we can see any change in Ant McParlin since his problems were made public.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here Best Odds
