Heading into the World Cup, Brazil were on a seven-match losing streak. But then they took a 3-0 win over Jamaica and all of that looked behind them. It was actually a pretty cohesive performance by them. They were riding that wave of confidence as they took a 2-0 lead over Australia in their second group fixture. But then it all fell apart for them as they crumbled to a 3-2 loss against the Matilda’s. So maybe it was the weaker opposition that are Jamaica which was making Brazil look good. They have scoring goals though at least, with Christiane netting four of their five goals in the tournament so far.
But their defence looked really shaky when Australia started come back at them, and they just started making mistake after mistake at the back. You have to think that the way in which they lost that game will really have hurt their confidence. You stack the manner of defeat on top of all the losses that they have suffered in 2019, and it has to have an effect on them. So far their superstar Marta has only played 45 minutes of action. They really need her fit and putting in a big performance to stamp some influence on the game.
