Italy Women News and Form

Italy has been a joy to watch at the Women’s World Cup 2019. They bagged that superb 2-1 win over Australia in their opening group stage game. That has been a big platform for them to build on. Their success over the Matildas was an upset and the Italians had to come from a goal down in the game too. They then turned up with a 5-0 win over Jamaica in their second game. They did lose 1-0 to Brazil in their final group stage match but were the better of the two sides on the day.

The loss didn’t affect them though as the Italians won the group. That put them through to a round of sixteen fixture against China. That was a favourable draw for Le Azzurre. Italy made no mistake with a comfortable 2-0 win. They have looked impressive and have played some creative, fluent attacking football. Cristiana Girelli and Aurora Galli are their joint top scorers with three goals each. Valentina Giacinti has scored five goals in her last eight appearances for her country.

The Italians have produced at least two goals in all but one of their last six. This is their first World Cup campaign for 20 years. The group stage loss to Brazil is their only defeat of 2019 (W10 D2 L1). There has been plenty of attacking output from them, but they do still look as if they are vulnerable defensively. Will they be able to pick up a clean sheet against better opposition? It’s fine doing it against China and Jamaica, but it’s against top teams like the Netherlands where it is going to count. Italy have just two clean sheets in their last nine.

  • The Italians have won ten of their last thirteen games

Netherlands Women News and Form

The Netherlands are going along well and they won all three of their group stage matches. So that gave them a tie in the first knockout stage against Japan. The Dutch had Lieke Martens to thank as she came up with both goals in a 2-1 success. She had opened the scoring in the 17th minute but the Dutch were pegged back before half time. Martens then won the match with a last minute penalty, although it was a really harsh award against the Japanse.

The brace for Martens moves her alongside Vivianne Miedema as the joint-top scorer in the tournament for the Dutch with two each. The Dutch have looked scrappy in this campaign and haven’t really clicked as attacking unit. But in Miedema and Martens, they do have star quality which helps them out. It is a seven-match winning streak that the Dutch are on, and they have conceded exactly one goal in each of their last three games now. The Dutch have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven games and this could be a really good, open game against Italy.

In their last 23 fixtures played, the Dutch have lost just the three games (D3). So they do have something going for them. But they did have their struggles through their qualification campaign, needing to come through a playoff tie against Denmark. That was after a second-place finish in their qualification group behind Norway. They are in the mix even if not looking on top of their game. Japan were running them ragged in the final 20 minutes of their round of sixteen contest before the Dutch got that lucky break of a penalty.
