It was a second-place finish that the Ivory Coast earned in the group stage of this year’s tournament. They came home behind Morocco, against whom they lost. The Ivory Coast got their group wins over South Africa and Namibia. After that, they went ahead to the round of sixteen in a tricky duel with Mali. It was tight all the way but the difference-maker on the day was Wilfried Zaha who got the only goal of the game for the Elephants. That leaves Zaha as the Ivory Coast’s top scorer in the competition with the two goals.
Since the turn of the new year, the Ivory Coast are W7 L2 from their nine games played. They have won four of their last five (L1). So they do have a bit of form going for them. It has been a comfortable ride for the Desert Foxes so far at the tournament. They eased to a 3-0 win over Guinea in their round of sixteen tie. Back in the group stage, they won all three of their games, netting six unanswered goals. So they have not shipped a single goal so far then in this year’s competition. With host nations and favourites Egypt having fallen out of the running, it has left Algeria as one of the front runners. They are currently trading as second-favourites to win the title outright.
Algeria have Adam Ounas on three goals for the tournament, making him the joint top scorer. Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez has chipped in with a couple as well. Algeria have really come good at the perfect time. They have strung together a ten-match undefeated streak of form since the middle of November last year, winning eight of those. They have put together a five-match winning streak currently, scoring at least two goals four of those five wins. The last time they made it past the quarters was in 1990 when they went on to win.
