Japan v South Africa Rugby World Cup Predictions & Betting Odds – 20th October 2019

Springboks can end Japan challenge

Rugby World Cup Preview – 11.15 am kick off

What a story that the Brave Blossoms of Japan have written for themselves at this World Cup. They have taken their home tournament by storm, defying the odds to top their pool ahead of Ireland. They line up against the powerful South Africa. The Springboks are favourites, but at the last World Cup, they suffered one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament as they were beaten by Japan.

Japan News & Form

Japan has made it to the quarter-finals for the first time. They have been well worthy of their place as well. After taking an early pool stage win over pre-tournament Pool favourites Ireland, Japan didn’t buckle under the pressure of growing expectations. Even when it came down to their crucial battle with Scotland, in a match which looked as if could have fallen foul of Typhoon Hagibis, the Brave Blossom didn’t let their concentration wane and they collected the victory. It basically showed that their own over Ireland was no fluke.

The host nation have been playing some stunning stuff. They are happy to keep the ball alive and move it through the hands quickly. They have been exceptional and will look forward to a rematch against South Africa who they famously beat in the pool stage of the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Japan are happy to play the game at pace and the amount of individual match-winners that they have like Kotaro Matsushima (tournament joint top-try scorer after the pool stage) is wonderful. Can they take their journey a step further?

South Africa News & Form

The Springboks will be wary of the challenge that is ahead of them here. South Africa arrived at the tournament marked as one of the teams with the potential to walk away with the title. That was because of their very strong showing at the Rugby Championship this year and them growing in statue under Rassie Erasmus, who has revolutionised and refreshed what was a tired-looking national side. Handre Pollard and Cheslin Kolbe have been huge for them in that regard.

They had a tough start to the tournament in taking on New Zealand and they fell short in a 23-13 defeat. Back in the Rugby Championship, the Springboks had drawn against the All Blacks. South Africa couldn’t keep the error count down in their World Cup opener though but had no problems in easing their way through to the knockout stage. They have the physicality to unsettle Japan without question. Expect them to be physical and direct as they won’t want to get drawn into an open game against Japan.

Japan v South Africa Prediction

South Africa can call upon the strength in depth that will probably deny Japan a glorious semi-final place. The Springboks are very strong, very direct and it would be a massive shock if they were to fall against Japan again. They are at a vastly different level to where they were four years ago and can handle the situation. It is worth noting that the two nations met in a pre-tournament friendly and South Africa dominated the match, stacking up over 40 points. Japan will have their moments, but will probably bow out.
