Johanna Konta v Donna Vekic Wimbledon betting odds – 5th July 2017

After racing through the first round of Wimbledon against Su-Wei Hsieh, looking free and easy after her big injury scare at Eastbourne in the build-up week, Johanna Konta will target a place in the third round on Wednesday. In this second round battle, she will face Donna Vekic, which makes for a fascinating contest because these two recently met up in the final of Nottingham and heavy underdog Vekic won the day.

That was a tight three set game though and the Total Sets at bet365 on over 2.5 is a decent 6/4 punt. You would hope that Konta would be a little more comfortable this time around though on the big stage and a Konta 2-0 set victory returns a price of 4/6 with Coral. In that recent meeting at Nottingham, Konta raced away with the first set and it turned around in a tiebreak at the end of the second set.

Johanna Konta v Donna Vekic Wimbledon tennis odds

Johanna Konta 1/4, Donna Vekic 3/1

The previous meeting between the two players was in Cincinnati back in 2016 on hard court, which Konta won in straight sets. So far this year, Konta has posted a 29/9 win/loss record for the season, claiming nearly $2million in prize money. As for the youngster Vekic, she is at 24/17 in the win/loss record for the season but she has picked up that title at Nottingham. This is where you would really expect Konta to step up to the plate and show her mettle even though it isn’t (if she wins) going to be her toughest match at this Championships.

Konta has two titles to her name this season and after she was rattling along well in Eastbourne, she pulled out of the semi-final stages after her fall in her win over Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals. That meant we missed a potentially great showdown between her and Pliskova. There will be pressure on Konta to get through this one as she goes back as favourite, even though she has actually only won two singles matches in six years at Wimbledon.

Konta is a better hard court player without a shadow of a doubt than she is grass, but her runs in Nottingham and at Eastbourne should have filled her with more confidence. She is getting there technically on the surface. If Konta can get through this then she would potentially faced Kristyna Ploskiva in the third round and then two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova could be waiting in the last sixteen.
