Clash of Wimbledon contenders in Eastbourne semi

Tennis Betting

It was a busy day of action for Johanna Konta at Eastbourne on Thursday. Because of the rain backlogging matches on the south coast, the British number one had to face two matches on the day. She opened with a great win over surprise Roland Garros title winner Jelena Ostapenko, needing three sets to battle her way through that ordeal, but then Konta stepped up her game in taking out World Number One Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

There was a concern for Konta though as she took a heavy fall on match point against Kerber where she needed treatment for ten minutes before dusting herself down and killing off the match. So it will be important to see if she is back to 100% after hurting her head in that game. But regardless of what happens now to her at Eastbourne, it has been some good form from here ahead of Wimbledon on the grass, which is not her strongest surface.

Johanna Konta v Karolina Pliskova Odds

In the semi finals of Eastbourne she takes on one of her fellow Wimbledon title favourites, Karolina Pliskova and this should be a great marker for Wimbledon betting action in the women’s draw. Pliskova got past Shuai Peng and then Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the semi finals, an easier path than what Konta had to battle her way through. Pliskova is in good form and the grass courts are suiting her big serve.

So Konta will have a lot of battling to do on the defence, but then again the Brit is very strong off her own serve in winning points. So this should be a great showdown between two serious Wimbledon contenders. The head to head between these two is firmly in favour of the Czech star though who leads Konta 5-1. That included a win over Konta in the semi finals at Eastbourne last season and three of Pliskova’s wins over Konta have been on grass.

But it was Konta who won the most recent meeting between the two which was in Beijing last year on the hard court. Both have claimed two WTA singles titles this year, have earned around the same amount of prize money and Konta has a 26/9 match record with Pliskova at 32/9 for the season. There’s not much to choose between them and this one to go to three sets should have some value at Bet365.

But in terms of the outright winner, it should be Pliskova with her head to head form over Konta on grass.
