Britain’s Johanna Konta steps into the second round at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday. She survived a three-set match in a tough opener against Daria Kasatkina. Next up for her is Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan who got her first-round match done in straight sets.

Can Konta take US Open journey a step further?
When Johanna Konta is dialled in, as she was in the first set of her opening match of the US Open 2019, she’s unplayable. Konta took a 6-1 first set win over Russian Daria Kasatkina. But then she let things slip in the second set, allowing her opponent to tie things up. But then Konta was back on her game to breeze through the deciding set.
It’s those lapses in concentration which could come back to hurt her at some point. It’s extra time on court that she didn’t need. Or maybe she did because she hasn’t had a lot of games under her belt since Wimbledon. Konta was dumped out in the first round of both the Rogers Cup and the Western & Southern Open recently. Can Gasparyan defy the odds against Konta?
Gasparyan was up against Australia’s Priscilla Hon in the first round. Gasparyan took a first set tie break to move ahead and then edged the second set 6-4. So it was tight margins from the Russian in what is just her second appearance in the main draw of the US Open.
The 24 year old has gone better than last year’s effort when she lost in the first round. In the three previous Grand Slams this year, Gasparyan reached the second round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and lost in the first round of the French Open. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two players.
Prediction
Johanna Konta should win this match. There were times in the first round match when she was brilliant. Gasparyan meanwhile had to grind to get her to win in the bag against a much weaker opponent than what Konta faced in Kasatkina. Another second-round Slam exit is on the cards for the Russian. Konta to win in straight sets.
