Johanna Konta v Venus Williams Wimbledon Odds – July 13th, 2017

Can Konta make it through to Wimbledon Final?

Tennis Betting

Johanna Konta has created a bit of history for herself in becoming the first British female in 39 years to reach the semi finals of Wimbledon. She matched what Virginia Wade last did all the way back in 1978 as the current British number one took down second seed Simona Halep in the quarter finals. It was a match in which Konta had to fight back in after having lost the opening set.

But she once again dug in there and pulled it out of the bag and it was notable how well she held her composure and started to step things up in the deciding set. Just twelve months ago you wouldn’t have put a lot of stock in Konta handling the big pressure points but she is right there, controlling herself and staying focused on what is in front of her. She has already shown tremendous courage and grit.

Now she does battle with veteran Venus Williams on Thursday for a place in the final and Konta is 4/5 favourite at bet365 to get through. What was great to see from Konta was that she was aggressive against Halep from the get-go and there was no letting up from her throughout the match either. She just went for her shots and it paid off in the end against such a tough opponent in her own right. However, it was another three-set match for Konta.

On top of her epic duel with Donna Vekic and then against the gritty Caroline Garcia in the fourth round, this was another extended time on the court for Konta to get through. That kind of thing can stack up against you down the line so it looks as if it is going to be important for Konta to come out and win the first set in the semi final against Venus Williams. It will be a tough fight back if she was to drop that opener.

The way things are going a three-set match at bet365 is trading at a price of 5/4. Williams deserves a lot of credit for her mental focus having been involved in a fatal car crash just after Roland Garros this year. She has held it together just about and in her quarter final against young Jelena Ostapenko, Williams never cracked a smile or showed any emotions until the match was won and then she let out a smile.

So she is focused and not taking anything lightly her and she has that big weapon of her serve. Her serve remains one of the best on grass and we have seen already how much it can destroy opponents. Williams has only dropped the one set throughout the championship so has managed to stay as fresh as possible really, but it is Williams who goes as even money underdog at bet365 for the match.

The obvious thing for Konta to do would be to move her opponent around the court as much as possible in the first set to grind her down that way. The two have already met twice this year, with Konta taking a win over Williams in the Miami semi finals on the hard court, before Williams took out Konta in three sets on the clay in Rome. This will be their first ever meeting on grass and overall in the head to head, it is Konta who edges things 3-2, having won three of the last four meetings.
