Will it be a four-horse race

The way that the odds are shaping up for the Kauto Star Novices Chase 2019 betting, is that a four-horse race is expected. At the head of the market at the time of writing is Slate House at 5/2* (betting odds taken from ebt365 on December 23rd, 2019 at 3:14 pm). A quick look at his form this season on his renewal, he has won two of his three outings. The most recent of those was in early decent as the 4/5 odds-on favourite at Huntington. That was just a shade short of the 3m distance.

So the claims are definitely there. But Black Op, for trainer Tom George, has been shaping up well too. He had his renewal right at the end of October with a victory by 15 lengths at Stratford. Granted that was in much lower company than what he will be up against on Boxing Day. But there was a steady run at Newbury at the end of November for him as well, beaten by a couple of lengths into second place in Class 1 company. He is a former winner of a 2m 4f novice hurdle and should stand up very well.

Does Master Tommytucker have the distance?

Paul Nicholls’ Master Tommytucker should be in the frame in this one. He’s not afraid to take on a field is the 8-year-old and claimed a bold win at Kempton on November 25th in a Class 4 chase. That was at 2m 2f and was after a 408-day break. While he showed a pretty good turn of speed leading from the front in that one, there will have to be a question mark over whether or not he can go front the front over the longer distance. This will only be the fifth race of his career, despite his age.

Among the front runners as well is Danny Whizzbang for Paul Nicholls as well. He should make for a very interesting contender here because of some kind of proven form over 3 miles. Danny Whizzbang has won three out of three at the distance, two hurdles and one chase. He had wind surgery earlier this year but returned after a 270-day break to a win at Newbury in a Class Novice Chase. The Distance is there to make each-way claims, but is the speed?

Predictions

Those are the main contenders in the field for the Kauto Star Novices Chase which is always a great one to look at. Black Ops looks in very good shape at 3/1 to make a run at the victory in this one, as his form stacks up. As a good each-way outsider, Jarverys Plate could easily come back fresher after not looking right in his last outing at Haydock. His training just looked a bit off which trainer Fergal O’Brien admitted too. But his win over Reserve Tank at Chepstow before that Haydock misfire shows he is capable. If he’s fresh, he could be in the picture.
