But the time has come for the action at Churchill Downs to play itself out.

About Kentucky Derby betting

This is a contest only for 3-year-old thoroughbreds. There is a limit of 20 runners that get to the race.

Entrants do have to go through a qualification process. That is called the Road To The Kentucky derby.

Essentially horses win points at set races to earn enough to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.

There is also a European Road to the Kentucky Derby and a Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. They offer one place each.

However, this year no offers have been accepted from either. So it is going to be a purely all-American field.

Another change for this year’s edition is that a new 20-horse gate is being used for the first time to try and cut down on congestion at the start.

Tiz the Law all the rage in Kentucky Derby betting

Heading up the market as the favourite in Kentucky Derby betting is TIZ THE LAW at 4/6* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:51 GMT on Friday 4th September 2020).

He hit his stride at the Florida Derby in March to get a score. He really came to the fore there, ramping up the interest in his potential.

That potential was franked when he went out and claimed the Belmont Stakes four months ago.

He demolished the field there winning by three and three-quarter lengths over Dr Post. That was an outstanding run that he put together there for trainer Barclay Tagg.

He brings more form to the table in this one after crushing the Travers Takes field on August 8th in a prep run for this one.

That was a win collected by five and a half lengths and it was his fourth score of the year.

Will stall 17 trip up the Kentucky Derby betting favourite?

Interestingly Tiz the Law has gotten a strange draw from the stalls, going from number 17.

There has never, ever in the history of the Kentucky Derby, been a winner from that gate.

That’s 145 runs and not one success to have come from number 17.

So that is an interesting little twist. But backers will argue that Tiz the Law is so good, he would fittingly be able to snap that streak.

Either side of him, Tiz The Law will have a couple of his biggest threats in the field. So what we have here is a situation where the perceived front runners are all going from out wide in the stalls.

TIZ THE LAW
4/6

Honor A P the main threat to Tiz the Law?

HONOR A P is a horse that generally likes to sit behind a little bit, so won’t be too bothered by the draw.

He will sit and conserve and probably take his chances on the straight which is where he could excel.

On the Road To The Kentucky Derby 2020, Honor A P claimed the Santa Anita Derby in June, his second win in three runs at the track after breaking his maiden in October 2019 at the track.

Honor A P was not a Belmont Runner and his last race was at the start of August this year when he took second place at Del Mar behind Thousand Words.

He is an exciting prospect here and is being well backed to launch a challenge to Tiz The Law. It will be fascinating if he is just sitting behind the favourite heading into the final straight.

What a battle that could turn out to be.

It is five races in his career and he has never been outside of the top two has Honor A P.

Interestingly he was toppled by Authentic in March when they squared off at the San Felipe Stakes before turning the tables for that Santa Anita Derby win.

Can Authentic bring his best to Churchill Downs?

The position of the draw for AUTHENTIC is interesting for Kentucky Derby betting.

He is a bold front runner and so he is going to have to have a blistering start to get into the position that he would like to be in.

Authentic is trained by the legendary Bob Baffert, and he claimed second place in the Santa Anita Derby before winning the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

That was in the extended series events that were created for the Road To the Kentucky Derby 2020 because of the day from it’s May date.

It has been four wins in his five runs, but it could be make or break for his race early on, depending on how well or not he gets out of the gate.

That’s the big key to watch for when it comes to the chances of Authentic in Kentucky Derby betting 2020.

The one loss in his career was in the aforementioned duel with Honor A P in the Santa Anita Derby.

Potential Place Claims

There are three clear power runners in this one, but it’s worth scouring through the rest of the field to see who could come up with a place finish.

Thousand Words

THOUSAND WORDS is one of the front runners of the chasing pack from a quote of 16/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:51 GMT on Friday 4th September 2020).

On his last trip he picked up a win at Del Mar in a four-horse field, taking out Honor A P in that contest.

That was the fourth win of his six career races and he has only been outside of the top two once which was in March’s San Felipe Stakes.

King Guillermo

KING GUILLERMO is likely to attract attention from the chasing pack, as he gave Nadal a run for his money at the Arkansas Derby.

The loss of Nadal through retirement because of an injury is a huge blow for the 2020 Triple Crown. Nadal was in a position to line up as the favourite.

But that run from King Guillermo against him puts him in the frame for place claims at Churchill Downs on Saturday and he is a 20/1 quote* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:51 GMT on Friday 4th September 2020).

He has also beaten Finnick the Fierce and Sole Volante in action during 2020 as well, the latter when King Guillermo scored in the Tampa Bay Derby. He has been in the places in each of his last four runs.

Sole Volante

The other pick for a place claim, at least for some considerations in Kentucky Derby betting 2020 is SOLE VOLANTE.

He did take part in the Belmont, won by Tiz the Law, and he struggled to get himself going in that one, finishing in sixth place.

During his career, he has picked up four wins. While he doesn’t look to have the power or class to actually win this thing outright, he is well rated.

Only three horses in the Derby have higher Horse Racing Nation ratings than Sole Volante. That may pique interest as a 40/1 each-way shot* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:51 GMT on Friday 4th September 2020).

Kentucky Derby Betting Predictions

We can only see one winner in this one. Tiz the Law looks something special and fully justifies those 4/6 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:51 GMT on Friday 4th September 2020).

Will that awkward draw in stall 17 potentially throw a spanner in the works?

Not really, because a quirk of Tiz the Law is that he likes to run on the outside anyway and doesn’t really get to the rail.

Another thing is that he has Honor A P and Authentic there out wide with him. So he will also be able to watch what his two main contenders are actually doing.

The Kentucky Derby will once again be an amazing two-minute spectacle.

Tiz the Law gets the nod, setting up the big chance at winning the Triple Crown when the Preakness comes around.

For the Kentucky Derby betting in 2020, it is Honor A P easily for us, who is the pick of the bunch to follow him home in second place.
