Kilmarnock v Rangers Odds and Predictions – Scottish Premiership August 4

Rangers should labour to opening victory

Football Betting

The clash between the teams that finished third and second last season is probably the highlight of the opening round of fixtures in the Scottish Premiership. Both sides will be looking to get the new campaign off to a winning start at Rugby Park.

Kilmarnock Team News and Form

Killie got off to the worst possible start under new manager Angelo Alessio as they were humiliated by Welsh part-timers Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Europa League. Nobody really expects the Ayrshire club to reproduce last season’s superb league form under Steve Clarke but fans will be disappointed if the club is allowed to drift back into mid-table mediocrity. Alessio will need time to stamp his own identity on Kilmarnock but the Italian has so far only added goalkeeper Laurentiu Branescu and midfielder Mohamed El Makrini to a squad which lost nine players over the summer and has only one recognised striker in Eamon Brophy. No doubt the artificial pitch at Rugby Park will help the home team again on occasions this season but the playing surface won’t faze the league’s top clubs and the new-look squad will need to be fast learners to adapt to a new style of playing.

Rangers Team News and Form

The Gers have also been in Europa League action and have enjoyed more success. But Steven Gerrard has several key players missing for the Premiership curtain-raiser, including Filip Helander and Jon Flanagan. Jamie Murphy and Graham Dorrans are other likely absentees. Northern Ireland international Steven Davis, who made his move from Southampton permanent over the summer, may need a late fitness test. Gerrard may be tempted to give a league debut to Joe Aribo as the former Charlton forward offers a goal threat from midfield. But he will have to compete with the likes of Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield. Rangers briefly threatened Celtic’s dominance last season but couldn’t quite keep up the pressure in the closing stages of the campaign. Further progress is being demanded and winning matches like this will be key. However, there is still a question mark over whether Alfredo Morelos will be at Ibrox beyond the end of the transfer window. The Colombian, top scorer last season, having turned down a big-money move to China.

Kilmarnock v Rangers Head-to-Heads – Old rivals renew hostilities

Kilmarnock and Rangers met an incredible seven times in all competitions last season. Both teams won twice with three meetings ending in draws. The Glasgow side have only won on one of their last seven visits to Rugby Park. Only one of the last six matches between the teams has produced more than three goals.

Kilmarnock may take a while to get going with a new manager and a much-changed squad which, at present, is short of striking options. The home side will likely make it hard work but the visitors should have enough to make a winning start at 4/6 with bet365. Rangers to win by one goal is 5/2 with the same firm with the Draw/Rangers on the Half Time/Full Time at 7/2 with Betvictor.
