Austrian team Linz are in their first-ever Champions League playoff tie. This is going to be only their fifth game ever in the European Cup/Champions League. In last season’s domestic campaign they finished runners up in the Austrian top flight. Last season they entered European action for the first time since 2000, losing in the third qualifying round of the Europa League against Besiktas, having entered in the previous round.
This is the first time that they have ever met a Belgian side. They came into this season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers in the third qualifying round stage and banked a superb 5-2 aggregate success over FC Basel. That was a big upset, with Linz winning both legs of the tie.
