When & Where is the Australian Open 2022?

The Australian Open 2022 is hosted in Melbourne from 17-30th January.

This is the 110th edition of the famous tournament; it is one of two hard court Grand Slam events (US Open).

There is a new show court that has been opened for the tournament, with the Kia Arena now being the fifth main court at Melbourne Park.

Who is the reigning Australian Open Champion?

Novak Djokovic won the 2021 edition of the Australian Open. That was for the third consecutive year running and it was the Serbian’s ninth AO Grand Slam title.

He boasts a tremendous 91% match win rate at the tournament. But Djokovic will not be back to defend his title at Melbourne Park.

Visa issues mean that he has not been permitted to stay in Australia for the event.

The 2022 Australian Open Betting Favourite

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev is the current 7/5 favourite in Australian Open Tennis betting* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport).

Medvedev was runner up to Djokovic in last year’s Australian Open Final.

But later in the year, the Russian denied Djokovic a clean sweep of the 2021 Slams by beating him in the final of the US Open.

That was the big Grand Slam breakthrough for Medvedev.

He showed up with some big form at the major events last year and will be heavily fancied to go one better than last year’s runner up spot in Melbourne.

Andy Murray Australian Open Odds

Yes, Britain’s Andy Murray is in the draw. Murray is a five-time losing finalist at the Australian Open, the title having evaded him throughout his long career.

Murray will have to defy unlikely 80/1 Australian Open Odds to break the duck this year* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport).

Of course, that is just fanciful as the last time that Murray appeared in the final of any Grand Slam was at Wimbledon 2016.

This will be the first time in three years that he has appeared at Melbourne Park.

While a title looks well out of the question, Murray will probably get himself involved in some big entertaining matches.

Key Contenders in the Australian Open Betting

So we have looked at the current Australian Open favourite Daniil Medvedev, but next, we cast an eye over some of the other key challenges in the field.

Rafael Nadal 11/2

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport)

You do wonder that with no Roger Federer and no Novak Djokovic in the field, whether the door be open wide enough for Rafa Nadal to walk through?

Throughout the Spaniard’s illustrious career, he has managed to get his hands on the Australian Open title once. That was in 2009.

Nadal has been back to the final four times since then without success, losing twice to Djokovic and once to Federer in those four defeats (Stan Wawrinka in the other one).

There could be good signs ahead for Nadal.

Earlier this month he won a warm-up tournament, the Melbourne Summer Set 1 event, for the 89th ATP Singles title of his career.

Granted the levels of competition at the AO are going to be a lot tougher than that, but that’s early positive 2022 vibes for Nadal.

Alexander Zverev 13/5

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport)

Germany’s Alexander Zverev has been knocking on the door of a Grand Slam success but hasn’t made that big breakthrough yet.

The closest that the German came was as US Open runner up in 2020.

Last year Zverev reached the semi-finals of both the French Open and the US Open.

In his last two Australian Open campaigns he has reached at least the Quarter Finals. He ended last season on a high, winning the ATP Finals.

Stefanos Tsitsipas 20/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport)

Much like Alexander Zverev, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas doesn’t appear to be too far away from a Grand Slam title.

There should be one in his future if he keeps on his current trajectory.

In two of the last three Australian Open campaigns, Tsitsipas has been a losing semi-finalist.

2022 will be just his fifth appearance in the main draw. He was also a runner up in last year’s French Open Final, losing a two-set lead against Novak Djokovic.

Andrey Rublev 40/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 January at 888Sport)

Russian youngster Andrey Rublev is not to be totally written out of this one.

He made the deepest progress of his career at the Australian Open twelve months ago as he was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

There were also a couple of ATP Masters 1000 Finals that he reached for the first time in his career last year as well.

He lost them both, but that was further positive steps made by Rublev who’s a danger in the draw.

Our betting prediction:
Rafa Nadal
11/2

Some underdogs to watch at AO 2020

The draw for the Australian Open looks wide open enough for some dark horse to come through the pack and make his presence felt deep into the draw.

In the next part of this Australian Open betting preview, we take a look at some of the longer priced options knocking around the men’s draw.

Jannik Sinner 18/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 January at 888Sport)

Big things are expected of Italy’s Jannik Sinner who reached a Masters 1000 Final last year in Miami. That was the big moment of his very short career.

The youngster did reach the Quarterfinals of the 2020 French Open. Sinner will be looking to at least make it past his previous best finish at the Australian Open of the Second Round.

Matteo Berrettini 28/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 January at 888Sport)

Another Italian is on the list next with Matteo Berrettini in focus. He made some pretty big strides last season.

He had to withdraw ahead of his Fourth Round match at last year’s Australian Open, just when he was getting going.

But throughout the rest of the season, Berrettini was a losing Quarter-Finalist at both the French Open and the US Open.

Berrettini reached his first and only (so far) Slam final with a loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

Carlos Alcaraz 33/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 January at 888Sport)

Young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz looks to have a tremendous future ahead of him. 2021 saw him step into the Grand Slam arena for the first time, participating in all four.

His best result was a Quarter Final exit at the US Open on the hard courts. At the end of last year, Alcaraz won the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Felix Auger Aliassime 50/1

* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 at 888Sport)

Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime brings plenty of top-level experience to the table. It’s hard to think that he’s still only 21.

FAA reached the fourth round of the Australian Open last year and with a quarter-final at Wimbledon and a semi-final at the US Open to follow, he’s making big progress.

There still has to be more to come from him and he will be a tricky one for any top challenger to face.

Australian Open Tennis Betting Predictions

Some big names are missing from the men’s draw this year at the Australian Open but do we see some youngsters coming through and storming the field?

No, we still have to go with some of the front runners in this one. The main pick is a pretty obvious one in DANIIL MEDVEDEV.

The composure and all-court ability of the Russian took massive strides forward last year and he should be right in the wheelhouse as the 7/5 favourite* (odds recorded 0900 GMT on 16th January 2022 January at 888Sport).

Rafael Nadal surely has to be worth a look as well. He looked fresh and sharp in claiming that title win earlier this month.

This is a lot harder work in front of him at Melbourne, but you wouldn’t put it past Nadal going deep.

The final selection for the shortlist in Australian Open betting is going to be Stefanos Tstitsipas.

There are still question marks over his mental approach at the business end of tournaments. But he has a good affinity with Melbourne Park and could sneak in there.
