Kane injury forces Spurs to go shopping

Tottenham need a striker. With their main source of goals, namely Harry Kane, ruled out of action until April, Spurs are in trouble. Even boss Jose Mourinho admitted that the team can’t play the same without him in it. With Tottenham being really lightweight in terms of backup scoring support, they are likely going to have to go shopping.

But January transfer window shopping is not always the easiest of things to pull off. But Tottenham have to go and invest now, with busy interests on the domestic and European fronts to come. There is a busy workload ahead and the London club need someone to try and fill Kane’s boots for a while.

Do they go for a big long-term investment and potentially pay through the nose, or do they get a cheap stopgap? Here are some of the leading contenders that Spurs could sign in January.

Krzysztof Piatek

The Polish striker is a good option for Spurs in January. Tottenham are the odds-on favourites to be his next club, so there could be some weight in this rumour. The AC Milan forward has had a good couple of years in Serie A, and at only 24 would represent a longer-term investment for the Lilywhites. Spurs and AC Milan have been in talks over him, reportedly for around £30 million but expect the North Londoners to have to come up with more than that if they get him. This is the January transfer window after all.

Dries Mertens

The Belgian is supposedly being targeted by Chelsea and Inter Milan. But could Spurs step in and grab the Napoli star? The thing with Mertens is that he is out of contract with the Italian club this summer so Napoli may well be in a selling mood. That could be good news for Spurs to bring in a proven goalscorer and he would by no means break the bank either to purchase. 32-year-old Mertens has four goals in sixteen league appearances this season for Napoli. He’s at 6/1 to be with Spurs after the January transfer window* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 10th, 2020 at 6:53 pm).

Edinson Cavani

PSG’s Cavani could be a decent short term answer to Tottenham’s problems. The Uruguayan 32-year-old is getting towards the twilight of his career and his league appearances in the French top-flight have been limited this season. He would make for a great target man for Spurs however, even on the short term basis. It’s kind of a no-brainer for the Lilywhites if they can get him relatively cheap. He could get them a few goals and carry his weight in European action.

Gareth Bale 11/1

Would Real Madrid man Gareth Bale fit the bill for Spurs? His future in Spain is just about as uncertain as it gets and the latest reports are that he is unlikely to move, even during this summer. If Tottenham were to go after their former star, then it would probably make the Welshman pretty happy to feel wanted and to be given a starring role back at the club. The trouble is, Spurs aren’t likely going to shell out the kind of money it would take to get him. Bale going to Any Chinese Super League side is still a shorter price than him going to Tottenham which is 11/1*(betting odds taken from Unibet on January 10th, 2020 at 6:53 pm).

Danny Ings

Tottenham Next Club After January Transfer Window 14/1
*(betting odds taken from betfair on January 10th, 2020 at 6:53 pm)

The Southampton man has been bang in form this season, having rattled off 13 goals in this season’s top flight. He has hit the peak of his career right now and after four wasted years at Liverpool, the 27-year-old is looking sharp and finding the back of the net. The form of Ings this season has to have alerted Spurs, given their situation. The right age, the right price and Ings makes a reasonable target. However, he looks very settled at Southampton and may not want to risk another situation with his career like he did on signing for Liverpool. He probably doesn’t make for a bad punt consideration at 14/1*(betting odds taken from betfair on January 10th, 2020 at 6:53 pm)

Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman is well down the pecking order at Chelsea now and January could be a good time for Giroud to move on. Of course, he is a former Arsenal player, which Spurs fans wouldn’t likely forget. But that didn’t stop him going from Arsenal to Chelsea. While he is not the most prolific of strikers, Giroud’s technical touch and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play is second to none. Tottenham would know what they are getting and it would probably be a cheap purchase as well. Giroud is at 20/1 to sign for Spurs as his next club after the January transfer window*(betting odds taken from William Hill on January 10th, 2020 at 6:53 pm).
