League One Tips & Odds – 15th December 2018

There was an upset at the top of the table last weekend as leaders Portsmouth suffered a defeat at home against Charlton. With Luton keeping up their hot streak behind them, the leaders saw their gap cut to the six points. At the other end of the table, none of the bottom six managed to land themselves a win and do themselves a favour.

It’s another enthralling afternoon of action on Saturday. We dial in on the 3.00 pm kick offs for our League One predictions and tips for December 15th, 2018.

Barnsley v Portsmouth

Barnsley have hit the skids after having suffered back to back defeats. Those defeats were both away from home though so perhaps we can throw their poor road form out of the window here. That is because they have home form for the season (W5 D4) and have won two of their last three at Oakwell. So the Tykes should be in this one. Portsmouth now get a good test of character having lost against Charlton last weekend in an upset. They were unbeaten in eight and on a four-match winning streak before that. Pompey are undefeated away from home in stupendous W8 D2 record, having conceded just seven goals in that sequence.

We are going to predict that the Tykes can cause Pompey a frustrating afternoon. After last weekend’s result, Pompey would be happy to avoid defeat. The draw is at 12/5 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on December 13th, 2018 at 7:06 pm)

Coventry v Luton

The Sky Blues have managed to put together a four-match unbeaten streak of form at home this season in League One. They have struggled for goals at home overall this season with just nine in ten home games. Fortunately, their defence has held up pretty well too as they have only conceded eight. Coventry though are only D2 L3 in their last five league games (home and away combined) and that could be trouble when Luton visit. The Hatters have dropped just two points in their last eight league games and are storming along. They have scored fourteen goals in their last four games alone. They only have a W3 D3 L4 record on their travels but those three wins have come in their last five on the road.

Luton are just a powerhouse of form at the moment. Coventry don’t look as if they have the goals in them to respond if the Hatters get on the scoreboard. Away win at 21/20 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on December 13th, 2018 at 7:06 pm)

Bet Luton 21/20* at William Hill

Sunderland v Bristol Rovers

The Black Cats are keeping up the pace well in their promotion push this season. They banked a good 4-2 home win over Barnsley last time out. They had their game against Accrington postponed last weekend so they are certainly well rested. They have remained unbeaten at the Stadium of Light this season. It will just be interesting to see if they benefit from fresh legs or have been hindered by lack of game time. Fortunately for them, Bristol Rovers are out of form at the wrong end of the table. The Pirates are on a four-match losing streak and have lost three of their last five on the road. They have conceded at least two goals in each of their last four home games.

Sunderland can ease themselves back into action with a good home win here. They can be forgiven for not being the sharpest at the back because of their extended break, so Sunderland to win & both teams to score at 5/2 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on December 13th, 2018 at 7:06 pm)

Bet Sunderland & BTTS 5/2* at William Hill

Bradford v Walsall

Bottom side Bradford have taken just the one win in their last eight league games. They have improved to a W1 D2 L1 record in their last four though. Their struggles on the road have been notable. In eight games away at sides currently 16th or higher in the table, the Bantams have taken one point. Walsall are up in tenth after a win over Coventry last weekend. That snapped a five-match winless streak of form they were on. They have not won in their last four away games though, failing to score in three of those four in a D1 L3 record.

Walsall don’t have away from but the Bantams clearly can’t be trusted to do too much at the moment. It’s worth looking at the draw in the match outright at 10/3 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on December 13th, 2018 at 7:06 pm)

Bet Draw 10/3* at William Hill

Gillingham v Wycombe

It has been back to back wins for the Gills after a 2-0 success out at Scunthorpe last weekend. That is actually back to back away wins for them. They do need to get their home form going again though having lost their last two on home soil. They have only won three times at home this season in League One and two of those have been in their last four home games. The trouble ahead for them could be in Wycombe’s current upturn in form. Gillingham are W1 D1 L5 in games against top-eight sides this season. Wycombe start in ninth and are W4 D1 in their last five league games. With six wins in their last eight games, it is certainly enough to suggest that they can push for a big three points despite only winning twice on the road this season.

Wycombe are likely to add to their low tally of away wins. We don’t see the Gills as having quite enough to prevent them from doing so. Away win at 9/2 odds* (betting odds taken from William Hill on December 13th, 2018 at 7:06 pm)

Bet Wycombe 9/2* at William Hill
