SPOTY 2020 Betting Odds Update: Lewis Hamitlon has done it. He won in Turkey on the weekend to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of even F1 titles.

With more race wins under his belt than the German great, Hamilton is recognised as the most successful driver in the sport.

Following his win at the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday, Hamilton has been cut into 8/11 for the Sports Personality Of The Year Award 2020.

The 35 year old looks likely to take it from a year in which a lot of sporting action has been curtailed.

Hamilton takes over at the head of the market from Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has been highly praised for his campaign to get free food for school children during this difficult year.

Turkish GP success elevates Hamilton

Hamilton only started 6th on the grid at this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix.

He only needed to finish 7 points ahead of teammate Valtterri Bottas in the race to win this year’s F1 Drivers title.

Hamilton got the win, earning the title with still three races to spare.

Showing once again why he is one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport in wet conditions, he ended up winning the race by 25 seconds.

It was another astonishing drive from Hamilton. He managed the race brilliantly, balancing attack and patience.

That win took him to 94 race wins during his F1 career. Hamilton having surpassed the 91 posted by Schumacher earlier this month.

If Hamilton does collect the Sports Personality Of The Year title 2020 then he will be just the fifth person to have won the accolade more than once.

Former F1 Driver Damon Hill is the only other in the sport to have won the SPOTY award twice.

The Other Key Contenders

Off the football field, 2020 has been a big year for Marcus Rasfhord.

He started a campaign to get free school meals to children from low-income families. That has been a well-supported success.

In early November, Rasfhord was successful in seeing the government make a u-turn on plans to suspend the scheme during school holidays.

That has really projected Rashford into a bigger public spotlight than just his efforts on the pitch.

The Sports Personality of the Year Award goes to the player who the public believes to have achieved the most that year.

That’s usually from a sports capacity. But off the field, Rasfhord has impressively used his sports profile for a greater good.

Rashford is at 15/8 to win* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 22:30 GMT on Sunday, November 15th 2020)

Tyson Fury is the third favourite currently in 2020 SPOTY betting at 7/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 22:30 GMT on Sunday, November 15th 2020).

Back in February the Gypsy King delivered a comprehensive win over Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title.

That was after a somewhat controversial draw from their first meeting, many believing Fury should have won then.

It was announced in mid-November that Wilder would not be fighting again this year as planned, in December.

So he won’t be back in the ring until 2020 and that could scupper his chances of getting the SPOTY award this year.
