Lille News and Form – Can Lille upset Chelsea?

On matchday one of this campaign, Lille ended a seven-year absence from the group stage. It wasn’t great return by them though as they suffered a 3-0 loss against Ajax in what was always going to be a tough opener for them. That loss in Amsterdam leaves Lille with just three wins taken from their last 17 European away games. However, this is at home where they have been carrying some form. Just as an indicator to that, they have won all four domestic league home games this season, winning none on the road.

They are, however, on a nine-match winless streak of home form in Europe (D4 L5). The last time they put in an appearance in the group stage of the Champions League, Les Dogues suffered a defeat in each of their home fixtures. This will be the first time facing a side from England since they met Everton in the 2014/15 Europa League and they played out a draw and a loss against them. Lille have taken a W1 D1 L4 record in their last six games against English opposition. They have taken two wins in their last six home games against England teams (D3 L2).

Chelsea News and Form – Will the Blues win in France?

Chelsea probably knew that they were going to be in for a tough group stage campaign. They suffered a home defeat against Valencia in their opening game at Stamford Bridge. So it means that they need a big lift. They could have saved a point in that opening game but Ross Barkley missed a penalty which would have tied the game. That was Chelsea’s first home loss in eleven European games. The last time that Chelsea went to France was in the 2015/16 Champions League when they lost against PSG in the round of sixteen.

The Blues are on a four-match winless run against French opposition. They have a W1 D2 L5 record in France. But they have at least gone undefeated in their last seven away games in European competition, winning five of those. Their successful Europa League campaign from last season got them back into the Champions League. They did also get a top-four finish in the Premier League anyway. The Blues have netted at least three goals in five of their last nine European fixtures. The loss against Valencia came after they had gone undefeated in Europe last season (W12 D3).

Lille v Chelsea Predictions

Draw: The French side have very much been a home team this season. Their form on home soil can’t be knocked. While they struggled at Ajax, they will know the importance of getting a result in this home game. Even though they may find the cracks in the Blues’ defence, Chelsea have enough in their attack to get a point. Draw.
