Lingfield 15:10: William Hill offer 3/1 racing odds on Starfighter – 17th January 2020

Big claims made by many for interesting handicap

Horse Racing Betting

At least half of the field that is going to be lining up for the 15:10 at Lingfield on Friday can make some solid claims. This is a Class 4 handicap over 1m 2f. There are eight runners in the mix and of them, it is Starfighter who has been holding the position at the head of the market.

But there are some fantastic looking challengers behind him including My Target and Mr Scaramanga, and so this should be one fiercely contested battle for supremacy. Read our Lingfield Racing preview for more details.

Normal Norman 7/2
My Target 4/1

Can Starfighter serve it up as favourite?

There was a decline in the form of the Ed Walker-trained Starfighter at the end of 2019. After a clutch of place finishes, he peaked for a victory at Salisbury in a Class 4 contest in early September. But then over the same distance, he could only finish 6th of 11 at Newbury later in the month, before being 16th of 19 at Newmarket in mid-October.

That Class 2 contest was just too much for him, notably entering as a 33/1 shot and he weakened a couple of furlongs out in a 1m 4f contest. So the drop back to this preferred distance should see him potentially discover something in this lesser contest.

Normal Norman sees a Thursday drift

Six-year-old challenger Normal Norman was going on the drift in the market on Thursday. That is despite him having won on his most recent outing on the flat. That was in December over a 1m. He did go in a handicap hurdle on New Years’ Day and pulled up there, but this looks to be far more in his wheelhouse and has decent claims because of that. He was at 3/1 in the early market, but was out a bit at 7/2 on Thursday* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 16th, 2020 at 2:02 pm)

My Target and Mr Scaramanaga

These two are also bringing fairly decent claims to the table here. Nine-year-old My Target put in a very promising run over course and distance just in December. He was beaten out by Al Ghazwani but a second of 10 in a testing race makes him a decent option to look at. He has good experience, with nine career wins from 7f to 1m.

The wonderfully named Mr Scaramanga has won at the distance before. The last test outing didn’t go great for him as he was second from last in a field of seven at Lingfield back in December. But has won five times before 6f and 1m 2f and while he looks as if he does need a little extra kick to push for a winning option, a place certainly isn’t out of the question.

Other Race Options

Berrahri is a distance winner and has not shot shown bad form. He was fourth in his latest run at Chelmsford in September. He won three times during 2019 at distances just a bit longer than this one. Zeyzoun took a win at Epsom in September over 7f in a Class 4 contest. He has looked heavy-legged since then with a 12th and an 8th.

Torochica was last out at Lingfield Park, taking on a 1m 2f trip in mid-December. He was 8th of 10 on that occasion, not only behind winner El Ghazwani but My Target as well. There was just nothing in the tank left for him a furlong out.

Predictions

This could shape up to be a really good race. My Target has a very good career at Lingfield and with some decent runs under his belt recently, looks a decent option to consider at 4/1 and gets the nod as a pick for this fixture* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 16th, 2020 at 2:02 pm)

Normal Norman’s switch to the hurdles last time out didn’t go well, but should still be in the fame in this one back on the flat. Starfighter and Mr Scaramanga both have reasonable enough claims to compete for places. But it is Berrarhi who produced some good runs last year, that could be a surprise package at 6/1* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 16th, 2020 at 2:02 pm)
