Battle Of Marathon

So it is 4/5 odds-on favouritism for Battle Of Marathon* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 13th, 2020 at 20:44). There is, of course, a good reason for that. He is a winner of six races from 6f to 1m 6f. Three of those victories happened on the all-weather.

So there’s that. There is also the win that he took on his last trip. Battle Of Marathon claimed a course and distance victory earlier in February by three-quarters of a length over Renardeau.

He had been the 5/2 favourite for that race.  That was his second win at Lingfield this season as well, so he certainly checks a lot of the boxes for punters in this contest. Particularly so in a small field.

Jamaican Jill to challenge the favourite?

Jamaican Jill is the only other course and distance winner in the field and she is at 10/3 for this contest* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 13th, 2020 at 20:44). She could only manage a third-place finish last time out which was at Kempton.

The course and distance success that she took happened on January 4th. That was in a class 5 contest and from a weight of 9-5. She is at the 9-3 mark for this one.

That may pull her back into contention but that success in January at C&D is the only win of her career. The fact that she didn’t come close to following it up at Kempton may hang in the minds of punters.

Support rises for Blowing Dixie

There has been a nice bit of form by Blowing Dixie recently. The four year old has a beaten favourite last time out. He had been the 4/6 odds-on favorite for a Southwell contest at the 1m 4f mark last month.

He was beaten there by almost three lengths by Calling The Wind. Still, that second place was no disgrace and it had immediately followed a win at Southwell in mid-January at class 3 at this distance.

All four of his career wins have happened at Southwell. Blowing Dixie could only manage a 10th of 15 on his last trip to Lingfield which was in December last year.

Fleeting Visit & Cry Wolf

Fleeting Visit comes back to action for the first time since October 2017. So there’s just no marker to potentially gauge what he could do on the day. He has won at 1m before that was well over four years ago.

Still, he’s not the outsider in this field. That doesn’t say much for Cry Wolf who was eighth in this last trip which was at Kempton in early February.

He is actually a distance winner and has won four races from 1m 4f to 2m. His form has been pretty dreadful since the start of last autumn.

Predictions & Tips

There is clear favouritism towards Battle Of Marathon here and we can’t find enough in the field to shake that up. So he goes as the pick for this race. The recent course and distance success, his second Lingfield win of the season says it all.

He is the one to beat and the one that looks most likely to offer the sternest of challenges is Blowing Dixie. He has a good track record at this kind of distance and has carried recent form. The big question mark over him is that he has never won anywhere but Southwell.
