Newbury 13:50 The Betfair Bet In-Play Handicap Hurdle Race

TIP: Dolphin Square 6/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

This is a big challenge over three miles for the field of nine who are taking it on. Heading up the lot is One For The Team at 10/3 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

Acey Milan is being hotly tipped to be in contention as well as Anytime Will Do. However Dolphin Square is going to get the nod for our selection in this competitive race. While there are many with decent claims, he has appeal because of his last run.

In January he made his handicap debut at course and distance and was fourth. That good trip on the track may count for a lot in this one. He goes up in the weights for trainer Phillip Hobbs, but has plenty of progression about him.

14:25 The Betfair Exchange Steeplechase (Grade 2)

TIP: Dynamite Dollars Top 2 Finish at 2/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

This race is going to be all about the return of Altior. How could it not be? He is looking to reverse the setback at Ascot in November where he was beaten by Cyrname. So Altior’s winning streak ended at 19. That loss was at a longer trip than the 2 miles which he has proven himself at time and time again.

Altior should really cruise through this race. So it is to who the potential second-placed horse could be. For that, we are jumping on Dynamite Dollars who just offers himself up as a nice surprise package. His last race was in January 2019, but he won it and it was his third straight Class 1 success as well. Trainer Paul Nicholls may well get him in the frame.

Newbury 15:00 The Betfair Denman Steeplechase (Grade 2)

TIP: A Toi Phil e/w at 40/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February)

This is one of the top features of the day at Newbury, but Native River is expected to crush the field in it. The 2018 Gold Cup winner is as short as 1/3 to put the win on the board. Looking at the type of company he is up against in the field, then it’s pretty clear to see why. Plus he is carrying some decent form with him.

Might Bite is having a crack at him, but is a long way from his top form and hasn’t managed to finish either of his last three races, the most recent of which was won by Native River. There is clear favouritism here in this race. So it’s shopping around for a little bit of alternative value.

For us, it is an each-way flutter on A Toi Phil out at big 40/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February). He is the only other distance winner in the field besides Native River with his C&D.

A Toi Phil is refreshed under a new stable and won a chase at Listowel in September, so it will be interesting to see what the change of trainer reigns to the table as well. He’s now with trainer Gary Moore.

Newbury 15:35 The Betfair Hurdle Race (Handicap) (Grade 3)

TIP: Stolen Silver at 16/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

With 26 entries, picking this one is not going to be easy. There are a lot of decent charges in this Grade 3 Handicap who have serious claims. That will have to start at the top of the market with Never Adapt and Not So Sleepy.

Mack The Man piques interest there as well, as does Thebannerkingrebel if he can bring his jumping a-game, which he’s prone to not doing. This has a super-competitive feel about it. It is to the Twiston-Davies connection of father and son trainer and jockey that we head to.

Jockey Sam is in the saddle of Stolen Silver who has taken two wins and a second in his last three races. The five-year-old collected a Novices’ Hurdle win at Haydock over a 2m distance in January, the second win of the season for him (Ffos Las). Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies had taken two of the last three editions of the Betfair Hurdle with Sam in the saddle of Ballyandy in 2017 and Al Dancer last year.

Warwick 14:05 The Kingmaker Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2)

TIP: Nube Negra at 5/4
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

A manageable field of six is going to the start of this Novices’ run. We can’t look past Nube Negra who is the odds-against favourite for the trip which is at 2m 54y. He brings some great form to the table and was last out collecting a Grade 1 second-place at Sandown in December.

Harry Skelton is in the saddle for trainer Dan Skelton and has won twice already this season. One of those successes was at course and distance where he looked just a class act and surprisingly comfortable over the hurdles.

There are a couple of other strong contenders in the field,w ith Torpillo and Precious Cargo standing out. Toprillo finished behind Nube Negra at Sandown in December, while Precious Cargo was a beaten favourite past time out. There’s decent claims there, but Nube Negra looks as if he can handle both.

Warwick 14:40 The St Mary’s Lands Warwick Mares’ Hurdle Race (Nhmops Bonus Race)

TIP: Copper Gone West at 6/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

The wonderfully named Indefatigable is the favourite for this contest at 11/4 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February). But she was a beaten favourite last time out, taking a third-place finish at Sandown in January. She hasn’t quite built on her career after taking success at Cheltenham in April last year.

So there is enough here to take on the favourite and that will be done so with the Tim Vaughan-Trained Copper Gone West. The mare has secured some pretty good form recently with two-second places and a win. She was most recently a runner up in a Class 1 trip at Sandown. Copper Gone West was 11 lengths clear of Indefatigable in that one and it just can’t be ignored.

Warwick 15:15 The Warwick Castle Handicap Steeple Chase

TIP: Gala Ball at 7/1
* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

The last televised action of the day on ITV on Saturday is this 2m 4 f Class 2 challenge. Heading up the market is the popular Two Taffs who has Harry Skelton taking the ride and who is the 5/2 favourite* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 16:43 GMT on Friday, 7th February).

But the 10-year-old can be opposed in this one and it is Gala Ball who gets the nod. He put in a fanatically committed run at Wincanton to secure a win in January. That was his second win in his last three races as well and despite a misfire in the middle of those two, he has always been a strong competitor over both hurdles and fences.

Katpoli, Clondaw Castle and Northern Beau may have some extended claims, but Gala Ball, just for the sheer voracity in landing his gutsy Wincanton win at distance tips the balance in his favour.
