Liverpool News and Form

The more that you look back at Liverpool’s Champions League campaign last season the more impressive it looks. They had a tough group to start with, posting a W3 L3 record in some tough games against PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade. But the Reds found a way to get themselves through to the next round only to find another of Europe’s giants, Bayern Munich waiting for them. After a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the first leg, Liverpool delivered a 3-1 away win. Something special that season looked on.

They did get a favourable tie in the quarterfinals as they were up against Porto, Liverpool winning that easily. But then came another massive challenge as they met Barcelona in the final four. Liverpool looked to be crashing out as well after losing the first leg 3-0 at the Nou Camp. But Jurgen Klopp’s men never gave up belief and romped to an astounding 4-0 second-leg home win to prevail.

The Reds then beat Spurs 2-0 in the Final, Mo Salah opening the scoring within 2 minutes from the penalty spot. They never looked back. This season has seen Liverpool lose a penalty shootout against Man City in the Community and romp to a 4-1 home success over Norwich in their opening Premier League game of the new season. Against the Canaries, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino started, with Sadio Mane putting in a second-half performance. It is an enviable front trio that the Anfield crew have.

Salah is the first goalscorer favourite at 10/3 for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 12th, 2019 at 2:24 p.m.). This is the sixth Super Cup for Liverpool with three wins from their five previous appearances. They last lifted the Super Cup in 2005 when they beat CSKA Moscow after extra time. The Reds have been dealt a blow with an early-season injury to keeper Alisson. However, given the form they have shown over the last twelve months, they are clear favourites in Istanbul.

Chelsea News and Form

Chelsea made progress in the group stage of the Europa League without the need for any fireworks. It was all fairly run of the mill from them against substandard opposition and the Blues took a W5 D1 record from their six fixtures. They never really had to break out a major sweat in any of their games. In the round of 32, they then had a pretty comfortable draw as they beat Swedish side Malmo 5-1 on aggregate.

They crushed Dynamo Kyiv in the round of sixteen, which was supposed to have been their most difficult test of the campaign up to that point. Chelsea produced a fantastic 8-0 aggregate win. Chelsea, under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri then beat Slavia Prague 5-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals which set them up for a clash against Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals. Both legs ended 1-1, Chelsea winning 4-3 on penalties.

The Blues then took on Arsenal in an all-English Final and Chelsea were dominant in the match, posting a 4-1 success with Eden Hazard getting a brace in his final game for the Blues. That was Chelsea’s second Europa League title from two campaigns. There have been changes since that success with Frank Lampard replacing Sarri and a transfer ban haunting them.

Also haunting them will be their 4-0 loss at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday in what was Lampard’s first competitive game in charge. The defence of Chelsea just collapsed in the second half in a wide-open game. They just had no answer to quick counter-attacks that United threw at them. Given the pace of Liverpool’s attack, there could be a long night ahead of the Blues. Does Lampard stick to his guns and keep playing the open, positive game that he wants, or will he try and shut up shop and respect the opposition in front of him?

Liverpool v Chelsea Predictions

Liverpool to win: This may be all one way traffic from Liverpool. Chelsea were tactically in tatters against Man Utd from a defensive perspective. They will be trying to close down a Liverpool attack which much better defences have tried and failed to do. Liverpool to win by a two-goal margin.
