Liverpool News and Form

The Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat in Edinburgh against Napoli in a pre-season friendly over the weekend. Poor results have been a bit of a trend for the Reds during this pre-season. They opened with wins over Tranmere and Bradford, but then lost three of their next four friendly fixtures (D1). Along with the reverse against Napoli, the other defeats for Liverpool in the sequence were against Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla. So it hasn’t been the greatest of pre-season preparations for Jurgen Klopp’s men. The boss is naturally playing it all down. Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane had big summers of international duty and haven’t been in club action over the summer.

Man City to win by 2 goals

It’s likely that at least a couple of those will be on show at Wembley and play some part. Liverpool have spent big over the last couple of years to try and get their hands on the Premier League title. It hasn’t happened yet, but they claimed the Champions League title last term. It’s been quiet on the transfer front from them so far this summer. This will be Liverpool’s first Community Shield fixture since meeting Chelsea in the 2006 edition when they beat the Blues 2-1. Liverpool have won the Shield 15 times before in their history, the joint second-highest tally (along with Arsenal) behind Manchester United. Liverpool ended last season winning 13 of their final 14 games in all competitions. They conceded in just one of their last six.

  • The Citizens have won only one of their last five against the Reds

Manchester City News and Form

The Citizens have picked up the Community Shield five times, including their success twelve months ago when they beat Chelsea 2-0. Manchester City were feeling the heat from Liverpool in the Premier League title race last season. They even had to overcome a seven point deficit at one point. But the Citizens stepped on the gas, winning their final fourteen league games of the season. They conceded just one goal in their final five fixtures. Really the telling point when momentum shifted their way, was when they beat Liverpool 2-1 at the start of 2019.

Manchester City have been out to the far east for the bulk of their pre-season preparations. They beat West Ham and lost on penalties to Wolves in the 2019 Premier League Asia Trophy. City were nowhere near full strength or top gear for any of that. City have made one big splash in the summer transfer market. They shelled out for Rodri from Atletico Madrid, a natural heir to the holding midfielder role when Fernandinho is done. Their big departures have been Fabian Delph to Everton and Vincent Kompany leaving on a free.

Liverpool v Manchester City Predictions

Manchester CIty to win: It is a scrap for some early summer bragging rights and nothing more. Liverpool haven’t looked themselves through the preseason and they may need a little bit more time to get themselves gelled together. Manchester City do have that extra quality in depth which may pay off at Wembley. Manchester City to win at 11/4* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on July 29th, 2019 at 8:07 a.m.)
