Liverpool News and Form – Will Liverpool win at home in Europe again?
Liverpool suffered a 2-0 loss at Napoli in their opening game of their Champions League title defence. That was their fourth straight away loss in the group stage of the competition as well. Fortunately for them, Anfield is a bit of a fortress for them on the European front and they are going to have to rely on positives there once again. They need that to get their campaign up and running. Liverpool have not been beaten in any of their last 22 European home games. It is such an impressive record.
They won all but one home game in their successful Champions League last season. Bayern Munich were the only team to go to Anfeild last year and avoid defeat as they played out a 0-0 draw. The Reds have not conceded in any of their last five Champions League home games at Anfield. Their most recent home fixture against Austrian opposition was against Grazer AK in the third qualifying round of the 2004/05 campaign. That’s a result hardly relevant to their current form.

The Austrians posted a massive 6-2 victory over Genk in their opening fixture. Five of those six goals that they scored in the match came in the first half of the game. So it was all over as a contest at the break. Can they bring that goal scoring threat to Anfield and cause an upset? Erling Braut Haaland netted himself a hattrick on what was his debut in the competition. He was the third youngest player in the history of the Champions League to net a hattrick. Salzburg are the reigning Bundesliga title holders.
There was Europa League action for Salzburg last season and there they claimed a victory in all of their group stage fixtures. They crashed out in the round of sixteen against Napoli on a 4-3 aggregate. They have lost back to back games on the road in Europe now, but have only suffered two defeats in their last 17 on the road (W9 D6). The Austrians have not lost any of their last seven in the Champions League away from home, taking a W4 D3 record there including qualifiers.
