Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic Betting Tips – EFL Championship, 7th December 15.00pm

Graeme Jones’ Luton Town and Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic meet in a crucial EFL Championship fixture at Kenilworth Road this weekend. Both teams are currently languishing at the wrong end of the table, with Luton in 21st position and Wigan a place and a point behind in 22nd. A win for one of these on Saturday could kick-start their season. Who will come out on top in Bedfordshire?

Luton Town News and Form – Will the Hatters make it back-to-back home wins?

Last season’s EFL League One winners Luton Town have had a tough season so far. The Hatters hover just above the drop zone with 17 points to their name. So far, Luton have won five, drawn two and lost 12 of their opening 19.

Town crashed to a humiliating defeat at Brentford last Saturday. Luton were second best throughout at Griffin Park, going on to lose 7-0. Prior to that, though, the Hatters had beaten Charlton Athletic 2-1 at home.

Luton have been in woeful form of late. Since a 1-1 home draw with Millwall back on October 2nd, the club from Bedfordshire have lost six of their last eight. Jones’ boys could really do with a positive result after their shocking defeat in west London a week ago. Luton are available at 7/5 to pick up a priceless three points on Saturday.

Luton’s last victory over the Latics came all the way back in August 1998

The Hatters’ last home win against Wigan was over 32 years ago

Key-Facts – Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic

  • Luton were thumped 7-0 at Brentford last weekend
  • Wigan have taken two points from the last 21 available
  • The two sides are separated by just one place and one point

Wigan Athletic News and Form – Can the Latics secure first away victory?

Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic are another team who are struggling in the Championship at the moment. Two points from a possible 21 has taken the Latics into the bottom three. Since a superb 1-0 home win over Nottingham Forest in October, Wigan have drawn two and lost five.

The club from Greater Manchester are one of only three teams yet to win away from home in the Championship. Barnsley are the only side with a poorer away record, as Wigan have lost seven and drawn three of ten. The Latics have won just one away game in the Championship since August 2018.

Wigan have really struggled on their travels over the past 18 months or so, but Cook’s men could really do with an away win on Saturday after slipping into the relegation zone. At the time of writing, the Wigan victory is available at 15/8.

Luton Town vs Wigan Athletic Predictions

Luton Town win: Wigan’s shock 2-1 win against Leeds United at Elland Road at the end of last season remains their only success on the road in the Championship since winning 3-0 at Stoke City way back in August 2018. For one reason or another, the Latics just don’t turn up away from home under Cook.

Luton have a poor record against Wigan, failing to beat them since August 1998, but I fancy Town to pick up a vital home victory on Saturday. The Hatters are available at 7/5.

Luton have won seven league and cup games this season, scoring the opening goal in five of those. Town are priced at 4/5 to score first in this crucial clash at the bottom.
