Madagascar have not been daunted by their debut in the Africa Cup of Nations. They picked up seven points from their three group stage games. They started on a positive note with a 2-2 draw against Guinea and then backed it up with a 1-0 win over Burundi. So that left them in a straight out battle for top spot with Nigeria in their final group stage game. Madagascar came up trumps with a very solid 2-0 success. There was little form prior to the tournament from Madagascar to suggest that they were going to be in this position. They were on a winless D2 L4 run of form before the big kick off. So when it has mattered most they have done the business. They got through to their first ever AFCON finals with a second place finish in their qualification group. It was not quite as easy for DR Congo in their group stage campaign. They had to recover from back to back 2-0 defeats against Uganda and Egypt. So that was a rough start for them. But they produced a big 4-0 win over Zimbabwe in their final groups stage game, which was enough to get them through to the round of sixteen as one of the best third-placed finishers. The success over Zimbabwe snapped a four-match winless streak of form that they had been on.
The DR Congo have managed to win just two of their last ten fixtures now (D5 L3) so it’s not been terrific form for them. They have only hit the back to the net in two of their last five fixtures as well. They have had a couple of stronger finishes in the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, a third place finish followed by a quarter-final exit last time out.
