What a stunning run from minnows Madagascar this has been. They find themselves in the quarter-finals in what is their debut in the AFCON finals. At the start of the tournament, they were ranked 107th in the world. It has been some journey. In the group stage, they pulled off a huge shock by defying odds and topping the section. They draw with Guinea, beat Burundi and then faced Nigeria in a shodown for top spot. Madagascar won 2-0. That was a huge result for them having been big underdogs for the game.

That fantastic group stage campaign saw them go through to the round of sixteen to face the DR Congo, who had only qualified as one of the best third-placed teams. So the draw was favourable for Madagascar who took their chance. The game ended 2-2 but then Madagascar impressively held their never to win the penalty shootout 4-2. Carolus Andriamatsinoro is the top scorer for the Barea at the tournament with two goals. The thing is, they aren’t really even in form, going just W2 D3 L4 in their last nine games.

The tournament from Tunisia has been a little odd, insomuch as that they are in the quarter-finals without having won a match yet. In their round of sixteen tie they faced Ghana and Tunisia did look as if they had done enough to win the game. However, they conceded an equalizer in the 92nd minute. The game went to penalties which Tunisia won to get past the Black Stars. Tunisia had finished second in their group behind Mali, with the Tunisians taking a draw in all three of their games, two of them 1-1 ties.

So three of their four games at the tournament have been 1-1 draws (90 minutes). The 2004 AFCON champions have only lost three times since they bowed out last summer’s World Cup. They are W7 D4 L3 in their last fourteen fixtures played.
