Mali News and Form

There was a good solid group stage campaign put together by Mali. Wens over Mauritania and Angola set them up for success. They then completed their matches with a draw against Tunisia. That was seven points and it was more than a comfortable lead at the top of the group that they had. Mali took back to back third place finishes at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 and 2013, but in the last two editions failed to get past the group stage. So this is a bit of positive progress back for them.

The form of Mali though has been a little inconsistent, however, they are proving to be a tough side to beat. Mali are W5 D4 L2 in their last eleven games and the two defeats in that sequence were one-goal margin losses against Senegal and Algeria, two of the stronger teams around. They have managed only one clean sheet in their last six games now, which is going to be a little bit of a concern for them moving forward.

Mali v Ivory Coast Head to Head

The Elephants are W11 D4 L2 in the head to head against Mali

  • The Elephants have one clean sheet in six

Ivory Coast News and Form

The Ivory Coast couldn’t secure top spot in their group. Despite beating South Africa and Namibia as expected, their big battle against Morocco wasn’t won. Ivory Coast lost 1-0 against Morocco which left The Elephants settling for second place. In their title defence two years ago, the Ivory Coast failed to get out of the group stage. So this too for them is a bit of renewed positivity back. This is not the easiest of round of sixteen ties for them though.

There has only been two defeats for the Ivory Coast since September last year. They have posted a W8 D2 L2 in the twelve matches in that sequence of games. The Elephants have scoring power in them, as they have netted at least three goals in four of their last eight fixtures. But can they stick together at the back, because they have managed just one clean sheet in their last six? Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha have both gotten on the scoresheet in this tournament.

Mali v Ivory Coast Predictions

Draw: It is hard to see past the draw in this competitive round of sixteen tie. Mali are in decent enough form to not get rolled over, even though they are the underdogs. This game needing more than the regulation time wouldn’t be a surprise. Draw match outright.
