Man Utd v Rangers Betting and Match Preview:

This is a re-run of a meeting in the 2003/04 Champions League when the two sides met, and United ran out comfortable winners on aggregate. After sneaking a 1-0 away win at Ibrox, United pressed home further advantage back at Old Trafford with a 3-0 defeat of the Scottish side. That gives your Champions League football betting stats an average of 2 goals per game in the fixture, and you can use that to base your Over/Under bets on. More of the same can be expected for this first group match of the 2010/11 Champions League, as Manchester United will be firm favourites to get their campaign off to a solid start. Despite a couple of lapses in the Premier League, United will be expected to find plenty of goals going forward against the Scottish Champions. One thing which will back this up, is the fact that in their last Champions League adventure, Rangers failed to pick up a single win in their group stage. In fact, out of their last thirty Champions League matches, Rangers have won just eight of them, and taking that kind of baggage with you to Old Trafford isn’t a great thing. This Battle of Britain may turn out to be a bit one sided, although Rangers are off to a 100% start in the Scottish Premier League. There is a little bit more history in this match, with Rangers manager Walter Smith once being an assistant to Alex Ferguson, plus Ferguson played for Rangers. It is pretty certain that there are going to be no favours handed out, and with United winning three and drawing one of the previous four home fixtures in the Champions League against Scottish opposition, it is more than likely that your football betting will be backing a strong home win here.

Man Utd v Rangers Betting Tip: United -1.75 Asian Handicap 3/4 at Stan James

Man Utd Betting:

You would back Manchester United at home in Champions League betting with some relative comfort. Until match day five of last year, they had gone unbeaten at Old Trafford for over twenty matches there in the Champions League, and that is what visiting teams have the daunting task of facing. The thing with Manchester United at the moment, is that they don’t quite seem to know who they are. They have looked great in attack, but at the back without Rio Ferdinand, they have shown some glaring problems, highlighted by Everton’s late comeback in the Premier League on Saturday. They have the experience of being one of Europe’s top sides for a long time now, and their failure to reach the semi finals last year in the Champions League, will only make Alex Ferguson even hungrier. To start with they landed themselves a very favourable draw, and they will be expected to pretty much walk their way into the knockout stages. Taking on Rangers at home really shouldn’t faze them, and you can expect Wayne Rooney to be back in the line up after missing Saturday’s Premier League match at former club Everton. Ferguson’s decision to drop Rooney from the squad in light of his personal life being dragged through the rumour mill, showed some kind of weakness that he doesn’t quite trust Rooney to be the big man and just get on with things. Will protecting him from hostile fans have hurt him? How can he be expected to be sheltered from all fans all season? Whatever the case, Rooney will be the key man again to United’s success on the European front, and there really is nothing wrong with United going forward. At the back though, they look troubled and uncertain of themselves, and they won’t have been helped with the news that defensive midfielder Michael Carrick will be missing for a while through a new injury. Although he has really failed to impress greatly since his move to Old Trafford, his experience will be missed. Ferguson did name new striker Bebe in his Champions League squad, but Owen Hargreaves was ruled out as he still battles for fitness. Champions League squads of 25 players had to be handed in before the start of the campaign, and once the knockout stages come around, clubs can name a new squad for the rest of the tournament. United make for a solid bet at home, and could be a great backbone for a Champions League accumulator, or look for further submarkets to enhance your betting, as United aren’t at particularly attractive odds to win, such is their expected dominance. A Wayne Rooney Anytime Goalscorer bet is 4/7 at Bet365 for example.

Rangers Betting:

The Scottish side didn’t have a great turn out in last year’s campaign. Their only two points in the group stages were actually picked up again from home, which says something about their character. But, by and large, they didn’t have the quality to stand up to the opposition, even though they weren’t short on endeavour and passion. Hoping for a better run this time around, the last thing they wanted to get out of the draw was a first fixture away at Old Trafford. They will again face an uphill battle to get the better of Man Utd on their home turf. One of the main factors in this is the fact that Rangers have only one once in the Champions League away to English clubs (which was against Lees in 1991/92). They will be Old Firm underdogs and perhaps the chasm in quality can be best expressed by the fact that the Scottish Champions will no longer gain automatic qualification to the Champions League. That is a major blow for the Scottish game, and perhaps indicative of how they are falling behind. Will this inspire Rangers to some new kind of level, determined to make their mark in Europe’s premier competition? It sounds romantic, but their best chances of success are not going to come against Manchester United. With Valencia and Bursaspor in the group, Rangers have a fighting chance, but a victory at Old Trafford is simply out of the question. Rangers have former England striker James Beattie in their ranks, along with Manchester City’s Vladimir Weiss, and they picked up a young Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic back in August. Their main attacking threat though will come from the lively Kenny Miller, who has said himself that his side need a big improvement in the way they are playing to try and live with Man Utd. A draw at best would be a happy reward for the Scots, but even that looks a long way off.
