Manchester City News and Form

What a comeback from Manchester City in the first leg of this tie. They were 2-1 down in the second half and down to ten men with Nicolas Otamendi having been sent off. But still, that did not keep the Citizens down, with Raheem Sterling netting a 90th-minute winner in Gelsenkirchen. This is Manchester City’s sixth straight appearance in the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League. They have lost both of their previous two-legged contests against German clubs.

But the Citizens have won two of their last three ties at the round of sixteen stage of the Champions League. Those are the only two wins from five previous appearances at the stage in total. The win in the first leg of this tie leaves City with a W3 L1 record from their four previous games against Schalke. In the second leg of their round of sixteen tie last season, Man City lost at home to FC Basel.

The defeat against Basel means that Manchester City have won just one of five home fixtures in the round of sixteen (D1 L3). They have form against German sides though going W7 L1 in their last eight against Bundesliga opposition. After beating Hoffenheim 2-1 on matchday six, this is their third straight game against Bundesliga opposition in Europe.

City hold a W7 D2 L1 record at home against German opposition. City’s form in Europe hasn’t really been much to write home about really. They have only won six of their last twelve games in UEFA competition (D1 L5). Still there is a positive of them never having lost any of their previous nine European two-legged ties after having won the first leg way from home.

Key-Facts – Manchester City v Schalke

  • City have won seven of their last eight games against German opposition
  • Man City have only ever lost once against home against German visitors
  • Schalke have won one of five previous away games in the round of sixteen

Schalke News and Form

Both of Schalke’s goals in the first leg came from penalty kicks against the Citizens. This is their first appearance in the round of sixteen since the 2014/15 season when they lost on aggregate to Real Madrid on aggregate. They have won only one of their five previous away games in the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League (D2 L2).

Schalke have suffered a defeat in each of their last three round of sixteen ties. They have won just two of their five previous appearances at the round of sixteen stage in the UEFA Champions League. Their last victory at this stage was against Valencia in 2010/11. In the group stage campaign, this season the Germans took four points on their travels, but have lost just three of their last fifteen road games in Europe (W8 D4).

Schalke are winless in their last six against English sides (D2 L4) and the Bundesliga side have managed one win in their eight previous trips to English opposition (D2 L5). Their only win in England happened at Arsenal. They have played two previous two-legged ties against English opposition and are W1 L1 from that. Schalke have suffered a defeat in all five UEFA ties in which they lost at home in the first leg.
