Manchester United vs Colchester United Betting Tips – EFL Cup, 18th December 20.00pm

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United have an outstanding chance to book their place in the last four of this season’s EFL Cup as they welcome EFL League Two outfit Colchester United to Old Trafford in a quarter-final on Wednesday. However, John McGreal’s men have already beaten Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur on their way to the last eight. Can the U’s cause an almighty upset at Theatre of Dreams?

Manchester United News and Form – Easy win for the Red Devils?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United narrowly avoided a cup upset when Rochdale came to Old Trafford in September. The EFL League One side took United all the way, with the hosts eventually winning 5-3 on penalties. In the next round, though, the Red Devils were excellent at Stamford Bridge, with a Marcus Rashford brace securing a 2-1 win over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Man Utd seemed to have turned a corner of late, as they go into this one undefeated in their last five, winning three and drawing two. In the Premier League, Ole’s boys beat Tottenham Hotspur and rivals Manchester City before drawing 1-1 with Duncan Ferguson’s Everton at Old Trafford last Sunday.

The Red Devils have a fantastic chance to seal their spot in the EFL Cup semi-finals. In truth, the home team, who are priced at 1/9, should have no problems whatsoever in this one.

Manchester United vs Colchester United Head to Head

These two teams have only ever met on two occasions, with Man Utd winning both

They last squared off in a League Cup affair way back January 1984, with United winning 2-0

The only other previous meeting was an FA Cup match in February ’79 – United won that one 1-0

Key-Facts – Manchester United vs Colchester United

  • Man Utd are unbeaten in their last five, winning three and drawing two
  • Colchester have lost only one of their past eight league and cup away games
  • The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League, while the U’s are ninth in League Two at the moment

Colchester United News and Form – A step too far for the U’s

John McGreal’s Colchester United have had a memorable EFL Cup campaign thus far this season. On their way to the quarters, the League Two team have beaten the likes of Swindon Town, Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Crawley Town. In the wins against Premier League Palace and Spurs, the Essex club prevailed on penalties after two goalless draws.

United are going great guns in League Two at present, unbeaten in their last six. Since back-to-back defeats to Crawley and Morecambe in October, Colchester have won three and drawn three. McGreal’s men are in ninth place, three points off the play-off places.

Colchester have done remarkably well to reach the last eight, but surely their luck will run out at Old Trafford. The bookies have them priced at 18/1 to cause a memorable League Cup upset on Wednesday.

Manchester United vs Colchester United Predictions

Manchester United win: Solskjaer’s side were excellent in the previous round against Chelsea, with Rashford’s stunning free-kick a highlight in the 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge. With a League Two side waiting in the quarters, Man Utd will fancy their chances of winning the competition this season.

Colchester have been incredible in the EFL Cup this term, but I can see their unforgettable journey coming to an end at Old Trafford on Wednesday. This should be a stroll in the park for the home side, so put some money on the Red Devils to win both halves at 4/5.

Man Utd took Rochdale lightly earlier in the competition, which nearly cost them dearly. They surely won’t make the same mistake again. I’m backing the hosts to win by four or more goals at 15/8.
