Monaco v Lyon Betting Tips – Ligue 1, 9th August 19.45pm

The 2019-20 French Ligue 1 season kicks off on Friday night as Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais do battle at the Stade Louis II. The Red and Whites, who were French champions in 2017, had an abysmal season in France’s top tier last term, finishing in 17th place. Meanwhile, Lyon ended their campaign in third behind champions Paris Saint-Germain and runners-up Lille. Can Monaco make the most of being on home turf, or will Les Gones leave with all three points?

Monaco News and Form – Red and Whites to hit back after horrid season?

Monaco just survived the drop last season, as the club finished in 17th position, only two points above 18th-placed Dijon. The Red and Whites picked up eight league wins, drawing 12 and losing 18 of their other 30 matches.

Monaco ended the season with just one win in nine, losing five of those along the way. At the Stade Louis II, the club claimed four Ligue 1 victories, seeing off Toulouse, Nantes, Lyon and Amiens. Away from home, Monaco won four, drew six and lost nine.

Thierry Henry tried and ultimately failed to get the club back on form last season, with Leonardo Jardim, who was sacked in October 2018, being reinstated as boss back in January. The 44-year-old Spaniard has bolstered his squad by bringing in Gelson Martins and Benjamin Lecomte for a combined total of £49m. Meanwhile, Youri Tielemans, Ronael Pierre-Gabriel, Ibrahima Diallo and Paul Nardi have left the club.

After such a poor campaign last time around, Monaco will be desperate to put things right this season. Can Jardim’s boys break into the top four in Ligue 1?

  • This will be Sylvinho’s first official game in management

Lyon News and Form – Les Gones to push PSG close in the title race?

Olympique Lyonnais finished in third spot last term, picking up 72 points from 38 matches. Lyon won 21, drew nine and lost eight, scoring 70 goals along the way. They ended their campaign in fine fettle, claiming 16 points from the last 18 on offer.

Lyon picked up an impressive 40 points on home turf, with just PSG (53), Lille (43) and Saint Etienne (41) claiming more. Meanwhile, only the champions accumulated more points on the road (38), as Lyon collected an impressive 32 points on their travels, winning nine times in the process.

Bruno Genesio left his role at the Groupama Stadium at the end of last term, opting to take over at Chinese Super League side Beijing Sinobo Guoan in July. Lyon brought in former Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester City star Sylvinho to the club in May. Although the Brazilian has been an assistant coach to the likes of Roberto Mancini and Tite, this will be Sylvinho’s first job in football management.

Lyon have been tipped for success under their new manager. At the time of writing, they are second favourites at 12/1 for the title. However, can they kick off with an away win on Friday night?

Monaco v Lyon Predictions

Lyon win: Les Gones could be a very strong outfit under new boss Sylvinho this year, whereas it could take time for Monaco to fully recover from last season’s awful campaign. I’m backing Lyon to start with a win on Friday, which is available at 11/8. Also, check out the tempting odds of 17/2 for the away side to leave the Stade Louis II with a 2-1 victory.
