Morocco News and Form

It was a group win for Morocco in the first stage of action at the Cup of Nations. They did it with maximum points as well. All three of their wins were by a 1-0 scoreline and a couple of those were really tight, dramatic finishes as well. They got their opening win over Namibia because of an own goal in the 89th minute from their opponents. Then in their final match against South Africa, Morocco only just got across the line with a goal in the final minute. Sandwiched between those two wins was a success over the Ivory Coast. Considering that they hadn’t looked to be in great form ahead of the tournament, this has been a decent upswing.

In their last four games played before the start of the tournament, Morocco were D1 L3. Only one of their last eight games have made it over 1.5 goals, yes that’s 1.5 goals. So this doesn’t look, especially under the pressure situation, that it is going to be a high scoring game. All but one of their last six fixtures were settled by a 1-0 scoreline, three of those going in Morocco’s favour. This is their first time past the group stage since their 2004 campaign where they finished as runners up.

Morocco v Benin Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between the two nations
Morocco have won all three previous clashes
Morocco have outscored 13-2 in their three previous games
Their one previous AFCON fixture was in 2004

Key-Facts – Morocco v Benin

  • One of Morocco’s last eight games have gone over 1.5 goals
  • Benin have never won an AFCON match
  • All three of Benin’s group stage games were drawn

Benin News and Form

It was a 2-2 draw that Benin started their campaign with, a surprise points which came against Ghana. They then played out a draw against both Guinea-Bissau and then Cameroon. Those two draws were both 0-0 scoreline. So while they may not offer up much as an attacking unit, they have at the end of the day, been difficult to beat. With those three straight draws in the group stage, it leaves them undefeated in six games now (W3 D3).

It has been one defeat for them in their last eight games, so Morocco may have to be patient in trying to break them down. But a look at the head to head and Benin have struggled against the Moroccans. Both goals at the tournament for Benin so far have come from Mickael Pote, so he’s their top scorer. This is the fourth time that Benin have found themselves in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. They had never before been past the group stage. But still, with their three drawn matches, they are looking for their first ever AFCON match win though (D4 L8).
