Europe's Mosconi Cup domination unlikely to be threatened

Snooker Betting

Europe are only a best 4/9 to continue their domination over the USA (9/4 with William Hill) as pool’s Mosconi Cup celebrates its 25th anniversary at Alexandra Palace this week.

Europe are bidding for a ninth straight win in this trans-Atlantic challenge with last year’s match-up in Las Vegas proving a disaster for the Stars And Stripes. Marcus Chamat’s team won 11-4 to edge ahead of the Americans in matches won. Europe have won 12 to the USA’s 11 with one tie and ‘Napoleon’ has a strong team at his disposal again. Scotland’s Jayson Shaw is among the Swede’s wildcard selections, joining the likes of Eklenti Kaci, Mario He and Niels Feijen. Shaw will be playing in only his third Mosconi Cup whereas Feijen will play for Team Europe for a 13th time. Snooker stars Ronnie O’Sullivan, Steve Davis, Alex Higgins and Jimmy White have all played for Europe in the past but the two sports rarely merge nowadays.

Shane van Boening, Skyler Woodward, Billy Thorpe, Tyler Styer and Corey Deuel will comprise coach Johan Ruijsink’s USA team. Deuel is their most experienced Mosconi Cup player with nine appearances under his belt. Styer is the only debutant in the party but Thorpe is playing in only his second match against the Europeans.

Golf fans will recognise the Ryder Cup-type format of the Mosconi Cup and it is a match that invokes similar passions. The Americans are desperate to end their losing run but home advantage is with Europe and it would be a huge shock if the visitors were to take the trophy back across the Atlantic with them.

Europe to win 11-7 is favourite in the Correct Score betting at a general 8/1 but if you fancy the same score as 12 months ago (11-4), BetVictor will oblige at 14/1. Feijin is a general 7/2 to Top European Pointscorer with Shaw at 13/5 with William Hill. Deuel is a general 4/1 to be Top American Pointscorer with Styer at a best 13/2.
