Murray and Konta Wimbledon double would hurt bookmakers

Bookies fearing a home double

Just imagine. Just imagine if Andy Murray and Johanna Konta pulled off a home double at Wimbledon this season. Ahead of the tournament, reigning champion Andy Murray wasn’t very well backed in the outright winner at Ladbrokes because of a season which has been disrupted by injury and illness. But with steady progress through the first week of action at SW19, Murray has been receiving plenty of patriotic punts ahead of the business end of the tournament.

Murray is an 11/2 shot to go and defend his title successfully, but he still has Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer knocking around the tournament. But Murray is in there and scrapping along the rise of Johanna Konta continues and after being around 12/1 to win the women’s draw a week ago, Konta has now risen up the field to become 9/2 outright favourite at Ladbrokes to win the title. So there is new pressure on her going into this one.

Her stock rose after an epic and exhausting win over Donna Vekic in the second round, which showed that she has all the grit and talent to win the event. That, coupled with the fact that one of the favourites Karolina Pliskova took a surprise early exit, Konta can really get up a head of steam now even though the grass isn’t her strongest surface. So again, just imagine if Murray and Konta both won titles at Wimbledon this year.

If they pulled it off, not only would be a stunning victory for British tennis as a whole, but it would also hit the bookmakers hard.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s rare we find ourselves in a position like this, but Serena Williams’ absence has blown the door wide open for a patriotic double for punters.”

“Both Murray and Konta have been great so far, and that’s left plenty thinking it could be a record-breaking Wimbledon for Britain.”
