Netherlands News and Form – Will the Dutch stop England?

After their big failure to come through World Cup 2018 qualification, missing out on the tournament, the Netherlands have been on an upward swing. Finally, they are back on a positive trajectory under the watchful guidance of Ronald Koeman. They have produced some impressive form recently. Looking back they did win their final three games of World Cup 2018 qualification, meaning that they have lost only three of their last seventeen games, competitive and friendly combined.

In their UEFA Nations League group, they got a tough draw. They were up against Germany and the current World Champions France. But the Netherlands didn’t sit back and just try and hang in there, they were positive and took the games to their opponents. It was some impressive home results which tipped the balance for them. The Dutch earned a 2-0 home win over France and a 3-0 win over Germany. In the final round of matches, they held on for a 2-2 draw in Germany (Virgil van Dyk equalising in the last minute) to end up beating France on head to head goal difference.

The Dutch are W3 D1 L2 in their last six competitive games. The two defeats which they suffered in that sequence were against France back in the Nations League group stage, then in their most recent game which was against Germany at the start of their European Championships qualification campaign. That was a 3-2 away defeat which the Dutch suffered. The Netherlands have struck at least two goals in four of their last five games played and in each of their last four played. They have taken three clean sheets in their last six.

England News and Form – Can England reach Nations League Finals?

After a slow start, England delivered some big results in the Nations League group stage. Their first game ended in a home defeat against Spain, so their backs were against the wall. When they could only manage a 0-0 draw against Croatia in their second game, qualification looked like a tough thing to pull off. But then came their big moment when they went to Spain. Raheem Sterling netted a first-half brace, helping England go in at half time 3-0 to the good. The Man City man is at 5/2 in the anytime goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am).

Spain did fight back of course, but England ran out 3-2 winners. Then back at Wembley for their final game, England found themselves trailing Croatia 1-0 with fifteen minutes to go. But then two goals in the final twelve minutes from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane turned the game on its head and it moved England to the top of the group by a point over the Spaniards. England have won their last five games across competitive and friendly games combined. That is a four-match winning streak that they are on in competitive fixtures.

To start their European Championships qualification, England produced a 5-0 win over the Czech Republic and a 5-1 win over Montenegro in March. That means that the Three Lions have scored at least three goals in four of their last five games played. They have scored at least two goals in each of those five. So there is so much positive optimism about them and boss Gareth Southgate is carefully managing this exciting young squad that he has at his disposal. After their great semifinal run at the World Cup 2018, can they drive on to the Nations League title?

Netherlands v England Predictions

Netherlands to win: This looks really evenly balanced. Of the two in the group stage of the Nations League, it was the Dutch who looked the sharper in front of goal and they came through such a tough group. They may just have enough to edge their way past England.
