Netherlands Women News and Form

The Netherlands have found ways to win at the World Cup. It hasn’t always been the most convincing of play from them. They did win all three of their group stage matches, but their first against New Zealand was only thanks to a 92nd-minute goal, just when it looked as if the Kiwis had done enough to deny them. They secured a win over Canada with a late second-half goal as well. But with a success over Cameroon sandwiched between those two results, it was three wins from three. That moved them through to a round of sixteen tie against Japan, runners up from four years ago.

It was 1-1 at the break, but the Netherlands were playing second fiddle to the Asians in the second half of the game. The Dutch looked spent in the last twenty minutes of that one. But they got a lucky break when a penalty was harshly awarded against Japan in the final minute. Lieke Martens converted to send the Dutch through to the final eight. More late goals in their quarter-final against Italy, saw them make it to the semi’s.

Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema have both come up big for the Dutch in this tournament. Martens is one two goals, with Miedema on three. This is just their second appearance at a World Cup, their previous one happening four years ago when they exited at the round of sixteen stage. It is an eight-match winning streak that the Dutch are currently riding, however, they have conceded in four of their last five, so have some vulnerabilities at the back. But there is a big factor of resilience with them as they have suffered only two defeats since October last year. They have their star power to call upon in times of trouble.

Sweden Women News and Form

In hindsight maybe the Swedes really were never bothered about winning their group. To do so would have meant beating the USA to top spot. Sweden may have looked at things and realised from the start that they were better off playing for runners up spot which meant that they went down to the easier half of the draw. So if that was calculated from the beginning, it has been paying off for them as they have a chance to make it to the Final.

In the group stage, along with their defeat against the USA, in which they fielded an under strength team, Sweden won their other two games. In the round of sixteen, it was a caution-first approach for Sweden against Canada. Sweden were more than happy to contain a somewhat limited Canadian attack and wait for an opportunity on the break. They got it through Stina Blackstenius on a counter attack. After trying to push briefly for a second to finish the game, that didn’t come and the Swedes settled for a 1-1 draw.

Blackstenius was the hero of the day again for them in the quarterfinals against Germany. Sweden won that 2-1 with Blackstenius netting the winner early in the second period. Arguably there hasn’t been a better tactical performance in this tournament than the one Sweden produced to shut down the Germans. That was no easy game for them and they had to manage coming back from having conceded early. That was their fifth win in six games. They have banked a total of four clean sheets in those six fixtures. The Swedish have seven in their last ten. They certainly have defensive strengths. Can they play up to them again?

Netherlands Women v Sweden Women Predictions

Sweden to win: It’s not entirely clear as to who the favourite really is here. The Netherlands are vulnerable at the back and haven’t been particularly fluent. So Sweden’s tactical nous could come up big time in this one. Sweden look defensively strong enough and can pounce on the counter-attack. Sweden to win.
