Newbury 14:25: Bet365 offer 1/2 racing odds on Altior – 8th February 2020

Altior can return to winning ways at Newbury

Horse Racing Betting

He’s back. This will be Altior’s first run since November last year when he came home second at the Christy 1965 Chase. With his astonishing winning run having ended and having been pulled from Boxing Day’s King Geroge, it is going to be all eyes on the brilliant two-miler.

He will be trying to get geared up for the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.

Altior goes in the Class 1 Betfair Exchange Steeplechase (Grade 2), which is registered as the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on Saturday in a field six.

Altior 1/2

Altior hard to oppose on return to action

Altior, he is one of the greatest two-milers of all time. Starting with success on October 10th 2015, he won 19 races in a row. He failed to make it to twenty as he was beaten by the impressive Cyrname at Ascot in November last year.

So that just raised the hype about his return. But a couple of withdrawals have left fans wanting until now. He is course and distance winner and he had been favourite for the Charity 1965 Chase where he was beaten as well. That was in a bit step-up of about an extra 5 furlongs to what he prefers.

His connections will have another Queen Mother Championship Chase on the mind for Cheltenham 2020. In this field, Altior should have a fairly unopposed run, which will likely serve as little more than a chance to sharpen him up before he heads to Prestbury Park. The 10-year-old still has plenty in him and is at 1/2 to deliver on return after coming back down to his favoured 2 miles.

Sceau Royal

Sceau Royal is the second favourite for the race at 8/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 7th, 2020 at 23:41). He was beaten into third on his last trip, which was in the Desert Orchid Chase in a field of five. The ground is likely to be favourable for him in this one.

Sceau Royal is no stranger to taking on Altior. He met him twice last year and was 3rd behind him at Cheltenham and second to him at Sandown. So he has pushed him relatively well in previous runs. Sceau Royal hasn’t won anywhere since November 2018.

Dynamite Dollars to surprise?

Trainer Paul Nicholls throws Dynamite Dollars into the mix in this one and he could be an interesting proposition for punters at 9/1* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 7th, 2020 at 23:41). He has won four chases from 1m 7f to 2m 1f.

It has been three straight wins from him and all in class 1 contests as well. That form culminated in success at Doncaster at the 2m distance in Novices’ Chase on January 2019. Despite that year-long absence, he looks like a great entry for this race for Nicholls.

The rest of the runners

Bun Doran comes into Newbury having won his last race. He took out Duc Des Genievres by one and a half lengths at Kempton over a 2m distance in December. That was in a Grade 2 Group 2 contest. So he will be stepping up in the company for this one.

Simply Ned hasn’t really shown the kind of form that is likely to see him get in the frame for a win. The 13-year-old was fourth in a renewal at Leadordstown in December last year.

Then there’s Kalashnikov who is a course and distance winner, but was a beaten favourite last time out. That was in the Grade 3 Group 3 Paddy Power Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in January.

He’s a talented horse, but was well beaten in that contest and Kalashnikov will be starting to frustrate punters at this point with the misses stacking up against him. This may not be his ideal distance either but does like a Newbury run.

Predictions & Tips

It is Altior all the way. He wasn’t good enough to get the better of Cyrname in that most recent contest, but then again, he was taking on an unfamiliar distance.

Perhaps the most interesting challenger of all is Dynamite Dollars who has been off the track for over a year now. A race within the last couple of months would have probably seen his price a little shorter, but still a very interesting one in the mix.
