King can reign in Diomed Stakes

Horse Racing Betting

The Coronation Cup was switched to Newmarket last week and another of Epsom’s big races, the MansionBet’s Beaten By A Head Diomed Stakes, is being run at Newbury this weekend as its traditional home concentrates on readying the stage for the Derby and the Oaks.

Diomed Stakes History

First run in 1971, the Diomed Stakes is named after the first-ever winner of the Epsom Derby.
It’s a Group 3 contest run over a mile and three-year-olds are allowed to compete against older horses, though circumstances mean there are none of the younger age group lining up this year.

Diomed Stakes Predictions

Outsiders not worth considering

It’s difficult to imagine Chatez (22/1 with Coral) will find the necessary improvement to make the leap from handicaps to a a Grade 3 while History Writer (a general 25/1) was almost certainly flatted by his form in Listed races in France at the end of last year.
Look Around (16/1 with Coral) may struggle to last home with the rain getting in the ground.

Can Diamond follow up sparkling Newmarket performance?

Marie’s Diamond (a best 7/1) produced a cracking front-running performance in a Listed race at Newmarket eight days ago and will be looking to make the most of his fitness at Newbury.
He’s probably still improving but may not be given as much leeway this time and he will be interesting to see how he reacts when pressure is applied.

Zaaki and Century Dream looking for repeat wins

Zaaki (4/1 with Bet365) won the Diomed Stakes at Epsom last year and Century Dream (a best 10/1) was successful 12 months earlier. He’s also placed at a higher level and appears to run well after a break so has plenty in his favour again

Tabarrak still looking to break into the big time

Tabarrak is a seven-year-old now so time is running out for Richard Hannon’s gelding to gain a first success at Group level.
He has won four times in Listed company but the next step has always eluded him and it may not be any different at Newbury – a best 6/1 makes limited appeal and only as an each-way saver.

King can have last laugh

Only beaten a neck in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and later beaten only two lengths in the Juddmonte International at York, KING OF COMEDY looks a cracking ride for Martin Harley in the Diomed Stakes.
Harley doesn’t often get rides in big races but replaces Frankie Dettori on the Kingman colt at Newbury.
The cheekpiece experiment tried in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on his final start last season is ditched and John Gosden’s charge (a general 9/4) need only run up to somewhere near his best to return to winning ways.
